  1. Thanks for that - nearly made a fatal error!
  2. Thanks for the info - much appreciated
  3. I have a 1989 110, which was converted from a Turbo D to a V8 petrol / LPG I think judging from the corrosion, it must have started life in a salt mine. Anyway – when dismantling for welding the rear cross member the fuel tank started leaking, I bought another, but the corrosion on top of the tank is worse, both the sender for the gauge, and the pipe into the top have disintegrated. My question is: Now it is petrol / V8 is there still a requirement for a return to the tank, where’s the best place to get the replacements for the sender, and what I assume might be the dip pipe which goes into the recess in the top of the tank. The flanged cover that fits in the recess in the top surface of the tank and has a pipe, (is this for the fuel return line and if so is it necessary with a V8? Are there simple blanks available (what is this called?) This is the 14th (out of 15) Land-Rovers that I've bought, I have put new fuel tanks in 8 of them. Am I just unlucky? What should I do to increase their longevity ? Thanks
  4. I did hear (or read somewhere) that you could wrap a couple of turns of washer pipe round the hot water feed to the heater, and that makes the spray warmed and therefore more effective? not sure I buy that, cant see it working my self? does anybody have any experience of this?
  5. I can confirm it is a 8.13 : 1 Compression ratio, maybe thats it? did they still use restrictors by then? My stage one V8 109 had them (but not for long!)
  6. Further to the questions re: Brake up-grade posted above – I'd welcome any advice you can share with regard to the correct choice of tyres essentially for on-tarmac, road use. I commute to work in a 1989 110 V8 Pick-up via narrow single track twisty lanes, and B roads, is rural, hilly, often damp, and can involve leaves, and agricultural activities. I have scared my self witless (that's Wit with a ‘W’) on a couple of occasions, so I need to improve my stopping distances. Especially in the wet. Currently using a rag tag mix (that were on it when I bought it) mix of BFG and Colway 265/75 16s So starting with a blank sheet of paper and a sensible budget – what would you use? Thanks
  7. I am lucky enough to have a 1989 110 V8 Pick-up that I commute to work in. My route involves narrow single track twisty lanes, and B roads, is rural, hilly, often damp, and can involve leaves, and agricultural activities. Having driven this route for many years with a 300Tdi 110 CSW, a 110 CSW Td5 and my current110 CSW Puma XS, I'm finding that the V8 Pick-up is giving me more ‘Excitement’ than is good for me at my age, and would welcome any advice form there experts here on what would be sensible (other than slowing down!) I have drum brakes on the back, but with the rear tub empty most of the time I'm wondering whether fitting an axle with discs will make a lit of difference? I'm also demonstrating my ignorance by posting similar questions on this forum about wheel spacers and Tyres. Thank you
  8. Can I ask the forum to share their knowledge about wheel spacers? What are the pros and cons? I have 4 Land-Rovers from 09 110 CSW XS to 59 SII 88 With a range of differing tyres from 255/85 Mud Pluggers to 750 XYLs I want to use the wheel spacers on the 110 V8 Pick-up I commute to work in. Will using the spacers allow me to use alloy rims on the older 110s without the correct studs? Any Buying tips? Thanks
  9. Thanks everybody for your help I am trying Landrover direct as well will post anything I find out - slightly alarmed at the 28 G 3.5 V8 REDUCED POWER Thats not what we want? I wonder what they did to reduce the power? (and how do I reverse it?)
  10. I wonder if you might be able to help me. With an engine number query? While filling in the insurance forms for a recently acquired Landrover I had to state the engine number, The number stamped on the block is 28G00271A compression ration is 8.13 : 1 This doesn't seem to fit into any of the series of numbers available on the commonly featured websites? Anybody know where it came from? The engine was transplanted into a 1989 Landrover 110 pick-up, 3 owners back and was thought to have come from a Ranger Rover Many thanks
  11. Thank you for all your replies gentlemen, a great introduction to this forum. I realised that it is probably the transfer box that defines what overdrive may or may not fit this arrangement, am I right in thinking that this is an LT230 transfer box? And if it is which (if any) Overdrive will fit? Having driven it about a bit I’m not so sure it ‘needs’ an overdrive (When did need ever play a part in rational thinking about Land-Rovers!) But I just happen to have an extra GKN Type, ( I have one of these on my 110 CSW 300 Tdi and love it especially when towing – the electrical can be a real pain in the Butt, but worth it IMO) Just out of interest what vehicles would have had these gearboxes from new?
  12. Santana Gear Box & Overdrive: Well I might as well use my first posting to jump right in and demonstrate my mechanical incompetence. I have just added a 1989 110 which was converted to a V8 and apparently had a Santana gearbox as part of the work. Does this take an Overdrive, and if so which one. Is the Santana Box a LT85 Are they robust It whines in all but 4th gear, (assume this is straight through?) assume it’s the layshaft? How much should I be worried? Thanks
