  1. Thought I would add a quick reply to this.

As everyone else has said, if your just travelling Europe/North Africa a 90 is fine as you dont need the payload. Further afield over a long period of time and I think you need to consider a 110 or trailer due to limited payload of the 90 and the need for extra fuel and water.

you seem to know your 90 intimately which is an excellent start for an overland vehicle as you know which noises to ignore, and which to take note of. you stand in better sted than people buying puma's and driving across the globe in them.

With the 90, storage and organisation is key. I have looked at tons of options over the years and I feel what I have is the best solution for my needs, but everyones needs are different.

take a look around our site for more details: www.siroccoverland.350.com

Ps. we now have a sankey for our trip to Siberia and Australia... couldn't bare selling it and buying a 110

  2. hi does any one no if the gap is open this year and if it is whats the dates

    cheers

this is the TRO posted at the eastern end (attached)

We walked the 'bombed bridge' a few weeks ago and it is in a very bad way. There was also a lot of compacted snow/ice on main step area just through the gap, if this is still present then I would imagine its going to be tricky. I certainly wouldnt attempt it. Its likley to have thawed out now but as its on a NE face it remains the longest.

not sure what the current state is politically. when we drove it we had Brecon park wardens tell us it was closed and we shouldn't be there (it was a RUPP). I have read its under highways agency control and all sorts of other things. despite all this, people still drive it and Brecon county council have put huge boulders on other lanes in their area that ARE closed.

    hope this helps :D

  3. Hi guys,

Had trouble starting my lightweight for a longtime and upon testing the motor it spun up good, but the solenoid was duff. Eventually got a replacement sorted and fitted, but I didn't even get a click. got under it and I think I orientated the 2 terminals the wrong way.

my question is, does this matter? will the solenoid only activate 1 way?

went back out just now to investigate and dropped the starter off again. on taking the solenoid off I got a drop of fluid and a burnt smell :( the (bendix gear?) had also fused to the main body of the solenoid! free'd it up now and the pin in the end is free also. Not got around to bench testing it again, worried it may now be dead, hopefully not.

so do you think it is a terminal orientation problem, or am I missing something? all wires I believe were wired correctly. The main from batt, brown from ign. and yellow from alt all went to the main terminal before, with the spade on the spade connector. not much to get wrong really, but I still managed to do something!

  4. I think the easiest to adapt would be one under the seat on the drivers side, like a 90. you would lose your underseat storage, but it would be worth it. I think you would need to add the fuel tank outrigger to support it and cut/paste the seat box. not sure what you would do about a filler. maybe use a series tank and fill from the top (remove the seat) this tank would hold about 45L.

the other option would be an underwing tank more commonly found on overland vehicles. these sometimes trickle diesel into the back tank, but I am sure there are sealed units you could adapt. these are generally 40L capacity.

easiest would be an internal tank, but it will eat your storage space and smell :) you could then though, have any size tank you need!

If you keep it small and low you should not need to alter your springs, I personally would go with an underside tank.

  5. Pretty sure Timken are what you will find in the LR box.

dont LR guarantee their parts for 12 months? maybe thats why there is a markup. I only think this because my indi garage will only use genuine parts. I have to get him the parts if I want to use something cheaper.

dont buy britpart whatever you do.

pack a spare pair for your trip, just in case ;)

  6. I did mine with some flexi pipe initially. It survived a longtime but looked like bit of a bodge. I took it to an exhaust place locally and got it made in SS for £100.

I removed the centre box and put in a small cherry, it is louder and im starting to regret fitting one. I have another box waiting to go on (a SS powerflow one) picked up from Ebay for 99p :) but I think its going to make the same noise! :(

the newer version sits more flush with the bodywork.

  7. hi all,

I need to buy some new jump leads, there are some 800amp ones on ebay.

Or can anyone recomend a good quality set for fair money....

I have 2x diesels to worry about..

    Cheers

    Dave..

    what size are the cables?

I had some 'HD truck' ones off a bloke at work for £10. they are 35mm square. lopped one end off and crimped on a large anderson connecter. All done for £20 :D

I think 25 or 35mm will be best, the smaller ones tend to burn out (16mm for example!)

  8. Hi,

I have a 79 lightweight that needs a new diesel filter, but when I contacted Paddocks they couldn't tell me if it uses the same filter as the civilian 2.25 diesel. Does anyone know if the filters are interchangeable for the filters mounted on the engine block and the firewall?

If not, does anyone know where to get them?

    Thanks,

    -Anders

do you have the original filter? there should be a part number on it. google is your friend :)

  9. Your trailer MUST wear the same reg number & plate clour as your tow vehicle, if it's registered after 1973 IIRC the rear number plate must be black digits on a yellow background, BUT you can fit a silver/black plate for SHOW USE ONLY.

As above. the convoy light is underneath the one on the body is the numberplate.

As westy says your plate has to match the tow vehicle too.

In addition to this info, if your vehicle is older than 73 you can no longer buy new black/silver plates they have to be current yellow/black ones :( you can use the originals if that is what is fitted but the law changed IIRC Sept 2008 that any new plates had to conform with current standards and could no longer be black/silver.

read into this as you wish, my IIa lightweight is running around on silver/black plates ;)
