  1. The West of the Plain has no byways to drive, only thing worth seeing is Imber when it's open. Dates are in the Newsletter. Anyone can subscribe to it. You need to speak/mail Julie Bowles and she'll put you on the distribution list.

You can have a muddy day out very easily on the Plain or you can just as easy avoid the mudf. There are lots of rarely driven lanes on ther Plain. People tend to use the main byways rather than thinking ourtsoide of the box and doing some research and exploring.

Not sure where the poster got the info about not getting lost or driving the Cat 1 tracks from. Cat 1 tracks are permissive roads on the Plain. You have no legal right to drive them but the military do allow you to. They can be shut without notice and you have no recourse.

Go to the Defender 2 forum and there are regular run outs across the Plain for anyone to join. Failing that look at the definitive map and do your own research. Project Ubique hasn't kicked in yet. But there are new signs at the end of all the affected byways declaring the intention with that lane.

  2. When it comes to billing the client, fuel economy has nothing to do with it. You can harge up to 45p/mile as stated above. Anything less then gets offset later on tax return. Your shocks/bushes/oil etc can be billed to your company if it is a company car. They should not form part of the charge to the client.

Thinking about it not sure you can combine the 45p/mile and repair costs as 1 relates to private car and the other to company car. You have to work out which system is better for you in the long term

  3. 9x9 are all standard sized. Not all of them fitted to the rear of LR's. You would eed the command varient. It should have a flap around the opening which does as you say go round the hardtop. There are no extention poles used in conjunction with a 9x9.

As you say you have a copy and not the genuine article.

  4. You don't need a radio to make a veh harness work. Some IB2 or IB3 (interconnecting box 2 way or 3 way) should do. A couple of hearsets and you are away. But IIRC the headsets aren't the most comfy. Or they weren't when worn for hours on end working 1 net and monitoring another. Gets confusing when you have 2 seperate conversations going on with 1 in each ear

  5. I think you'll be OK. There are plenty of challenge trucks that run the cooler behind the cab or even where the heater box used to be on a 90. So the cooler is a lot higher than the sump. THey don't seem to have to many issues and will work their gearbox a lot harder than most people

  6. I don't understand this forum sometimes. Why do people feel it is their morale duty to ridicule others. Yes it is not as legal as it could be but do you look at ll the hookey clothing on fleabay and ask them questions as to wether it was sewn in a sweat shop up North somewhere? I don't expect you do.

Anyone buying this and not understanding what it is deserve to get shafted. There is no need to announce it to the world. If you are so concerned have you reported it to Ebay? Or the Police? Prob not.

  7. I understand people get attached to their vehicles but to refuse a PUMA is daft. IT is faster, quieter, more economical, has carpets, has a decent heater and aircon and a radio that works.

To turn this down out of principle doesn't make sense. Unless you are a luddite and frightened of all the knobs and buttons on the dash

  8. I always take the cups off and grind a small groove across the top of each spider leg. THe existing groove if present, in my opinion isn't deep/wide enough. So I give it a helping hand.

But I'm a bugger for forgetting to grease them after a day out so end up changing them on a too regular basis. I know I should grease them more but never actually get round to it

  9. You can find a lot more about this tank ( conqueror ) and others that they have on the Historic military vehicle forum. The guys at the reme museum have restored quite a few including centurions and shermans and quite a few non tracked vehicles also. I may be intouch about the mega squirt set up for our AVRE 165 centurion at work, which runs the same engine. Our restoration was slightly easier than theres as we had all the parts to start off with plus three other centurions just in case we needed some spares!!

    Jason

Wasn't the AVRE a 155. The size of the gun barrel when used for bridge demolitions when the primary method failed??

  10. The D4 will be perfect. If you look at the D3 forum you'll see people throw their motors at the scenery all the time. Morocco/Tunisia seem to be their favourite.

On the D3 the front belt (serp) which runs everything like on a PUMA. If that goes it's normaly the idler that takes it out. So there's 2 things. A set of break pads, I know the D3 eats pads so assume the D4 is the same. And then you go down the road of normal spares for a trip. Oils, hoses or self amalgamating tape. And a big grin on your face.

If you speak to a company called BBS in Cyprus they will sell you a box of tricks that will allow you to remap your car in seconds and remove it in seconds but more importantly it will allow you to read fault codes and clear them. So allowing you to keep rolling.

Don't be frightened of all the electronics. Remember a few years ago when the TD5 came out. Everyone was scared of that. THey soon realised if looked after it's a mighty fine engine.

  11. Don't need the inhib switch for the MOT. And it's not really a H&S thing is it really when you look at it. It can be a good thing on a normal car but if you are going to compete with it then that's a different matter. My 90 has just sailed through the MOT without it fitted.

Why does everyone blame the H&S people for things when it's not them?
