  1. Not true in the slightest, as hinted above, there has been a very well publicised case of a LR nut that got jailed for a not inconsiderate time after a modification on his LR failed and resulted in the death of 4 of his kids. The jail thing seems pretty meaningless now doesn't it?

Bolt anything to your vehicle that causes it to fail/maim/kill and YOU are responsible.

    .

That isn't quite right is it? IIRC The reports were that he was travelling too fast, had mismatched front calipers, and a rotten rear axle mounting point. When he braked it caused him to swerve up a bank the stresses of which ripped the mounting from the chassis sending the 110 off into the river. The prosecution was for death by dangerous driving. (this of course is based on newspaper reports which invariably misquote everything, so my apologies if I am perpetuating some myth)

Personally I'd be wary of buying safety critical parts from 'a bloke in his garage'. Not saying they won't be far better than the big names, just you won't know till it's too late.

  2. ....

There may be hope yet (for CSW owners at least)!

I thought true CSW owners were ok anyway and it was those that had converted to an SW that had a problem (as well of course anyone with a commercial).

What did your body type on the V5 say?

I'm getting confused more and more :S

  3. I've got the DVD, its interesting how my opinion of it has changed... Always enjoyed his style, but I now pick up on his mistakes :P.

I also have the DVD and know what you mean about changing opinions ;)

One big omission as far as I recall is there is no mention about the legal side of things, considering the amount of chopping and changing he did to the chassis you would have thought he would have mentioned something. Especially as it is still registered as a Range Rover and IIRC he just had a normal MOT...... I guess changing a Range Rover into a 100" Defender isn't a radical alteration :P

  4. ...

There is, however, a reason for not soldering the cables on automotive cables: They get stiff where the solder is absorbed, giving a risk of breaking after prolonged vibrations. Thats the explanition i´m told, anyway...

There won't be any prolonged vibration if the bugger won't start ;)

  5. Rear tool post http://www.hemingwaykits.com/acatalog/Rear_Tool_Post.html the idea being that parting off is done a lot so you can leave the parting tool set up (as well as whatever other tool you are using).

Quick change tool posts are good for getting centre height set but good quality ones are expensive, I had a cheaper one and managed to break the retaining t bolt shaped bits, the fitting also had a tendency to work loose hence the over tightening and breaking of the other bits. I'm now back using the same holder as you Nigel and tbh I'm quite happy with it.

I think the cross drilling attachment is a block with V grooves in it at the centre height of the lathe that can be used to hold round bar/bolts etc and by mounting the drill in the lathe chuck allows you to drill exactly accross the bar.

  6. My method was to buy a domain name, you can configure it so all mail is delivered to your normal email address. So you can use any address you like at that domain name and receive mail for as long as you like with no extra config.

    Sorry for going OT

  7. I use a different email address for every site I register with so I know when I get spammed who leaked my email address and can then just chuck the address away as well as cease using that company.

I've used LRDirect a few times over the past few months and haven't received any spam.

I also found them very helpful when I rang up to change an order.

  8. Or even just a leaky boost pipe going to the injection pump from the turbo? Mine was after the engine swap (I'd forgotten to tighten the banjo bolt and it fell out! doh) anyway the symptoms were very similar.... and the banjo bolt is a fiver :-s

  9. A good squirt of wd40 and a wiggle with a pair of pliers freed mine up, it was siezed when I bought the 110 mainly due to a couple of missing manifold studs and buggered gasket stopping the turbo ever getting up to pressure. Give it a try if you are bothered.
