  1. Hi, I have a 1988 RRC which is my offroading toy. I have also came into the possession of a 1993 Disco 1 which has less than half the Km's on it. I am going to overhaul the 3.9 v8 and fit it into my classic which has about 400,000kms on it and is a wee bit tiered to say the least and also the fine spline axles. But I was wondering are there any other parts off the Disco I should swap over that would be considered an "upgrade". I think I read somewhere that the brake booster is better, is that correct? Thanks
  2. Hi, I does anyone know if it is possible to buy pre-made up spring perches to weld onto a front axle from a Disco 1. I have an axle that had coil overs fitted and I want to go back to a standard spring set up.
  3. No removed the rear propshaft and the back axle was still locked so Its definitely in the back diff somewhere. Rangies have a transmission brake on the back or the T'case. Going to swap the whole back diff out. I'm Looking at getting a Maxidrive rear end.
  4. Yeah I removed the propshaft when I was trying to figure out what was going on. Transfer case is free its in the rear diff
  5. I got a phone call from my mate the other day asking if I wanted to go down for a play by the river with him and his Pajero for a hour.. Yeah great idea I thought that will be awesome! Got home 5hrs later with the rangy on the back of a trailer .. I had only been there for 10 minutes when we spied a lovely looking bog that just had to be tested....... 30 seconds later this was the result... Just a wee bit stuck. It was more like thick wet cement than mud hehe.. Oh well well just winch out I thought, now my spanky new winch which had only been fitted to the truck that morning was not wired up yet so couldn't use that. We connected it up to the winch on the Pajero and nothing his winch was not working .. Cut a long story short after 2 1/4 hours, lots of wheel spinning, 3 snapped snatch straps 1 10000lb recovery hook bent straight, my snorkle filter bowl smashed by one of the snapped snatch straps and connected up to a Pajero, Safary and hilux all at the same time I was out.. Great I thought, I can still make it home for the BBQ... Not likeley. Got 500m down the gravel road and all 4 wheels locked solid and according to my mate a very impressive skid ensued.. I narrowed it down to the rear diff, with the wheels jacked off the ground you can turn one and the other turns in the opposite direction so the spider gears appear to be working ok. With the wheels on the ground they just will not turn and are locked. What have I broken? Pinion gears? I removed a half shaft and it now free wheels ok but still put it on a trailer to get it home. Alll in all a fun packed afternoon that really really impressed my wife hehe especially when I was 3hrs late for our BBQ with friends
  6. Yes its the flexible hose I need to extend. I will be getting them made up locally as shipping to NZ is a bitch :-( I just need to know how long to get them made.
  7. HI, I have a 1988 RRC with a 2" body lift and I am going to be fitting a 2" OME lift and Gwyn Lewis shock mounts etc. I will need to get new brake lines made up but how much longer will I need to get them made?
  8. Right, thanks guys. I'll have to find out if it has a donut..
  9. Why is that? If the length is OK will it still not work?
  10. I have an LT230 so I will be ok. Thanks!
  11. Sorry, I meant prop shafts not drive shafts..
  12. Hi, Would the drive shafts from a Disco 1 be compatible with a Range Rover Classic? thanks.
  13. Thats reassuring to hear as I have just bought Gwyns set up only start reading all the bad stuff about dislocation afterwards. I havnt fitted it yet but I'll go ahead and see how it performs.
  14. So why do all the guys in competition use these set ups? I don't see how it can be more unstable, especially on sidings, in this instance longer softer springs will make the vehicle just as unstable. From what I read I think the scenario is you are approaching a deep hole on the left. When you drop your front left wheel in the hole the front axle drops down on the left side and the body rolls to the left as well. The rear suspension then dislocates allowing the body to roll further and then the whole lot tips over???Surely with more articulation the body will always be kept more level. Can any one explain the physics behind this theory? Even when the body is leaning over the axle tube is still attached to the chassis via the damper and the weight of the wheel is lower and further outboard relative to the center line than if it was hanging in mid air off the spring. confused...
  15. This one is very entertaining... http://www.landroversonly.com/forums/f17/springs-retention-cones-13676/
  16. Hi Guys, I have been reading on forums in the US and Aus about their opinions on dislocating suspensions. They seem to think that they make the truck very unstable and in serious risk of rolling over! They claim retained spring are better. As alot of you guys run these suspensions I was wondering if there was any truth to it? example - http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=980255
  17. Yeah I had thought about that as well but I do plan on fitting 4.12 CWP's so would be alot of work to swap that out when I do the front...
  18. Well I have looked into this and have been weighing up the pros and cons of both ways for some time but I dont really have the fab skills. I wouldn't know where to start really so paying someone would work out more in the long run and theres not many axles available with lockers so I would need to fit them adding to the cost. Also NIssan axles have huge diff heads so would need even bigger rubber to get the same clearance. 80 series axles here are well sought after and have the price tag to match also mostly Japanese spec down here with OPEN diffs so in the same boat with having to buy lockers. The Ashcroft lockers are 1/2 the price of and ARB down in NZ. Then theres the certification issues with the axle swap which is more money (300-500quid) Upgrading the Landy axles does not require to be certed. So not as simple as you might think.
  19. My hobby is not restoring cars its offroading, besides have you seen the price of Defenders in New Zealand?? I'm sure theres lots more money to be made in restoring other marques....
  20. Hi All, I'm looking for a bit of advice. I have a bit of money to spend on my RRC and cant decide where to spend it. I want to fit 35" tyres in the future so will need to get Ashcroft axles, HD CWP's, CV's etc and I also want to fit his locking differentials. I believe this will be the best mod for me regarding offroad performance. Now I have enough to get all this right now but my suspension is very "tiered" and needs an overhaul and I wanted to do a 2" suspension lift. In fact I want to fit a Gwyn Lewis kit. If I go with the suspension upgrades then I will have enough to get a winch and build a front bar etc. So do I...... a) Fit a winch and challenge suspension now and save up for the axle upgrades. Or.. B)Upgrade the axles now and save up for the suspension upgrades and winch.
  21. Hi, has anyone used one of these kits and would they recommend the kit. It is to fit to a Range Rover Classic. http://www.extreme4x4.co.uk/acatalog/Evolution_Kit.html
  22. Well if you a going to break down I suppose you couldn't have picked a better spot.
