  1. Ha ha, yeah.... well.... After me calling him back and saying again that I really didnt think it would work, I popped round at the end of work and he apologised and presented me with a new unit like this; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-HEADLIGHT-CONVERSION-KIT-HALOGEN-/251076975857 And he only charged me £15, Iv just got the lights fitted, all good now, and there is a massive difference in the brightness, so I dont have to worry about getting nicked driving to Aberdeen tomorrow night Cheers to you all.
  2. Cheers for the replies, yeah I've ordered a new set, I'm just looking for a quick fix as I need the Landy tomorrow night, and the bloke at the garage was sure that the bulbs he is getting for me could be exchanged onto my current sealed units,I just didn't think that was possibleI'm thinking that sealed means sealed!
  3. Cheers mike, yeah I was reading up on it last night, ive got a day planned in a couple of weeks to do it,I bought the units that retroannaconda recommended. Thanks again,
  4. Yeah that was my thinking, but the bloke who is on his 70s and had quite a few landys in his time is positive that it can be changed. I questioned it a few times but he was adamant about it,and he's not a cowboy,I've used this garage a few times. Hummm, maybe with the risk,I could alerts take the bulbs back if he is wrong.
  5. Hello. Just been to the local garage, the bloke there says I can change the bulb in the sealed headlight, is that correct, he can't get new sealed units in today but can get the bulbs, and I need the Landy tomorrow night to drive to Aberdeen so I'm looking for a quick fix for now, cheers
  6. mmgemini, are you saying that upgraded decent headlights that are left on the stock/old landy wiring could have a detrimental effect on the old wiring/contacts (I dont want that, Iv had too meny electrical problems!), or is it just that the new lights wouldn't be as good as they could be (I could live with that). If its the case that upgraded lights will affect the wiring/contacts in a negitive way then I would rather just buy a set of stock/not upgraded lights and not have to worry, and change/upgrade at a later date when I have time to get all eletrical! I hope Im making sense?!
  7. Brain fart! Looks good mmgemini, I would love to do that to my landy at some point when time allows (just like the rest of the plans that I have for it!), but Im hoping for a quick fix right now, I have spotters on it connected and relayed to the full beam at the moment, so brightness is there when I need it. I appreciate your imput very much and your information will for sure be going into my "todo" list!!!!!!! Cheers!
  8. Too true. I didnt know about that loom mod, good to know, ashame Im carp with electrics, I just cant seem to get my head around wiring at the best of times, but for sure worth a thought. Thanks.
  9. Nice one retroanaconda, looks good, but a bit steep in the £s! But sorely tempting!
  10. Cheers, unfortunatly Im classed as in the Scottish Highlands so I dont think they will post to here, but im gonna send them an email anyway. Thanks
  11. Hello, The dipped beam on my passenger side headlight has given up the ghost. Its a 1986 ex-military 90, sealed unit headlights. I was wondering what headlight units you guys might suggest changing over too? I may as well change them both whilst Im at it, something with a bit more brightness would be good, but id prefer not to spend too much on them! Also how tricky are they to change. Any links to changing the units over and new units would be a great help. Thanks a lot, Ash
  12. Hello. Yeah I was thinking they may have just been referring to the Discovery, but tis good to get it sorted. No problem in the wet at all, but then again Im never really going fast enough on tarmac roads to go all squrley, for snow and mud they are ace, and iv never had much noise off of them (hard to belive I know!). Cheers
  13. I work for SSE as a tree cutter, all our vehicals are limited and have been for some time now, not sure how to sort it though Im afraid, but I will ask about.
  14. Hi. Im getting myself some new rims and and tyres. The 265 75 16 will fit wont it? It just on the web-sit it says it needs a 2 inch lift which Im not keen on doing (dont need it , I just want bigger tyres on my stock landy, and yes it is purely because I think big tyres look cool). This is the web page; http://tyresdirectuk.co.uk/shop/product-info.php?prodname=x4-265/75R16-Malatesta-Kobra-on-16x8-Black-Modular-(Land-Rover)--&id=17144 I am currently running this tyre (only smaller) and Iv always liked it. Cheers, Ash
  15. Hyperlinks - I had done a google search before posting here, and through complete lazyness I just copyed and pasted that from a guys question on another forum. Cheers for that you guys, yeah seeing as its just a top up I will go with my tesco value coolent, best to be sure though. Cheers.
  16. Hello, I have to drive to Aberdeen and back tonight, about an hour and a half each way. I have a small leak from my coolent so I thought Id best chcek it, its only got under a quater left so it needs topping up before the drive, but the only coolent I can get my hands on is Tesco anti-freeze summer coolent, the datails of the coolent are below, do you guys think this stuff will be ok to top up with? Cheers for your help. (my 90 is a 1986 ex-military with a 200tdi conversion). Front sticker Tesco Ready Mixed Anti-Freeze and Summer Coolant. Protects all types of engine 1 litre Back Sticker Antifreeze. Tesci ready mix antifreeze is a liquid coolant based on mono-ethylene glycol and contains corrosion inhibitors designed to give corrosion protection to metals commonly found in cooling systems, as well as providing the engine with protection from freezing. It is premixed with de-ionized water for convenience -Excellent corrosion protection -Correct concentration in the cooling system will provide protection down to -17 C -Blended from antifreeze concentrate which meets BS 6580:1992 -Mixed fleet protection - one coolant for all cars, vansa and trucks (petrol and diesel) -Protects all types of engine Direction for use: When the engine is cool remove Radiator cap or expansion tank cap and add to coolant Our Promise: We are happy to refund ..... etc PRoduct safety instruction .. 17. Oh right.... Iv got these discs..... http://www.lrdirect.com/FRC7329-Brake-Disc-Fr-90-110-91-Rr-86-90/?sfi=FRC7329 these pads.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-90-FRONT-BRAKE-PAD-SET-86-92-/370517273499?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item56448ceb9b and I think they go with these calipers... part numbers SEB500450 and SEB500440 http://www.lrdirect.com/SEB500440-supplied-by-bearmach-branded-bm.html I think that the pads and retaining pins you have linked maverik are the ones after mine (mine ure up to 86, the ones you have linked are 87 onward). Does anyone know what retaining pins/springs go with the parts I have listed , or if there are any other bits I will need? Like I said I have the pads and discs already, Im just about to buy the calipers I have listed, Im just wondering what other bitsare needed. I will probably get new caliper bolts as the blots that are there could do with replacing, can anyone provide a link for the correct bolts? Also what about new break line hoses from the calipers? Sorry for all the questions, I have looked, Im just not very good at finding the answers! Cheers!
  18. Hello. Im buying new callipers for my 1986 ex-mod 90, SEB500440 front right & SEB500450 front left (solid discs), but Im not sure what the serial numbers are for the extra bits like the pins/retention kits, and what ever else goes with the callipers (I have the pads). Do you guys know? I have checked out retroanacondas technical page and parts book, but mine are pre 1987, or may be Im just not looking properly? Cheers
  19. Well, cheers, but like I said in the first post; a fuse (15amp, should have been 10) had been chucked in, and the positive/earth were the wrong way around (sh+t happens), hence the melting, but its all sorted now, the wires are sound, Iv wired it up the same way as the fuse box diagram shows (it was not the same as the diagram when I started which is another reason why it was confusing me), spots are wired up to the light stalk with a seperate switch so I can choose to have the spots with stock lights or just the stock lights, a new nato plug is in, and now Im focusing on sorting out the callipers (but thats my next topic/thread and question!). Cheers though. Oh...and got my radio and cd player working again
  20. Well the last time I had new tyres put on the rims were rusty as hell inside, notm looking pretty, so they are in need of replacing. Will check out the 130/hd/wolf steel rims, cheers.
  21. Iv been looking at some rim and tyre packages, would tyre size 265/75 16 be ok on a a standard 90 (standard suspension), the rims that come with this are 16x8, would the 16x8 give me greater choice of tyre in the future over 16x7? Also whats do you guys recon on the regular modular rims? They are a damn site cheaper then the rest, but will that make them rust and buckle befor my eyes??? Cheers
  22. Nice one Biggles, I like the look of that, cheers.
  23. Hello. The rims on my landy have been there since 1986, so Im thinking about getting a new set. I not very clued up on how tyre sizes and rims match up, the tyres Im running at the moment are 255/65R 16 and I recon they are good for a long while yet, so Im wanting to get rims that will accommodate those tyres whilst being able to go for a substantially bigger tyre in the future, is that possibly? So I guess the question is - is there a maximum size of rim that I can get for that tyre, or is it just the one...and what is it? Also any recommendations on rims would be appreciated, unfortunately my budget isnt huge, I would love to get a set of ZU rims, but for around £150 a pop their a bit steep for me! (unless anyone knows where I can get some cheaper?) Cheers.
  24. Fixed! Clipped the wires to the plug, fitted the new break light switch, and all seams to be working, however I have learnt that even when you think you have sorted electrical problems somrething else seams to crop up, so I will give it a couple of days, but at the moment everything it coming on and going off when I want it to, and not burning anything! Fingers crossed it stays like that, cheers again!
  25. "If you're lucky, the damage has been done in the trailer socket loom which you can disconnect and isolate - though in my experience the damage tends to happen in the tightly wrapped loom wiring behind the dash." Cheers eightpot, yeah I have had a look at the loom behind the dash, in fcat anywhere I can get to wires to have a look and I think that I have been very lucky and that its just been the trailer plug wires that have melted, phew! "Ditto Eightpot comments. No point cutting the trailor wires when that whole pigtail can be easily disconnected from behind the RH lights - just re-trace the wires back from the trailor socket and you'll see clearly which "bundle" it is in the rear connector" - Another reason for cutting at the plug is that the plug is gonna have to be changed, and where all the wires connect behind the RH lights the trailer wires have the discription printed onto them so it will be easier to reassemble when I get a new plug sorted. Sorry, not very good at explaining myself, there is reason behind the madness! Again thanks for all the help
