  1. Cheers for the replys. Fortunatly for me I live out in the sticks, but inevitably every now and again I have to venture to the towns. Its just been one of those things on the to-do list. I had a closer inspection earlier toddy, and I can see no sign of any wires for a reverse light. I forgot to mention that when I had a look for where the switch goes, I was a bit horrified to find that not only is there no switch fitted, but that was also no blanking plug! I think that culled account for one of the reasons that Iv just had to pay out for a new clutch kit, and Im a bit miffed that the guy who fitted it didn't notice it either! Cheers
  2. I know where I am supposed to fit the switch, but I cant find any wiring that I can connect the switch to. I have read a few other threads about wiring up a reverse light to an ex-mod, and they have all said that the wiring should be there ready to go. Am I just unlucky here, or am I just not looking hard enough??? Also, if the wiring for whatever reason isn't there, will it be an easy job to sort that and add the wiring? And if so how would I go about doing it? Thanks once again for any info! (I forgot to say, I wasn't sure if I should post this in the military bit, but I figured that anyone who has done this has turned their ex-mod into a civi defender anyway, sorry if its in the wrong place though )
  3. O right Iv got ya. Yeah i tend to do the extra maintenance anyway, as I work in forestry and Im out driving on either dirt tracks or peat, I learnt the hard way concerning the props! My job is one of the reasons I was to sort the breathers, I never know how deep the puddles are! Cheers again
  4. I ment reverse plunger. Did I say car?!?!?! I ment my awesome TRUCK!!!! Cheers for picking me up on that!
  5. Hey, cheers for all the replys So anyway, 2 1/2 weeks later its all finally sorted. Needed new.... clutch kit, master slave cylinder, clutch fork, gear lever housing, reverse dampener, and a couple of other bits and bobs... I think thats was it. All came to £480 including labor, which I don't think it bad at all!??? I saw the destroyed parts, it looks like they had been on there way out for a very long time! The landy now runs like a very different car, was less shuddering, quieter, and it excellerates!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This being my first landy, I just thought all that was very normal, and it is...just not to that extent. Thanks again
  6. Cheers, good advice, so...asides from the breathers, how do I sort those bits above? No need to worry about ABS, as my lump is 26 years old, and the headlights are sealed beams. (200tdi from an RRC, sorry, should have said that way before!). Cheers
  7. Hello. Thanks for all the replies, all very helpful, and all warnings considered. Im not planning on deliberately driving across a river, but I like to know that whatever I come across will not be a bother. 4 years ago I had my dream bike - a KTM 950 Adventure S, where I was living we had floods, but I figured the bike could handle it - it couldn't, and I no longer have my dream bike. I figure its better to preempt as much as possible. Am I making any sense? Cheers
  8. Cheers Gazzer. I have found this; http://www.shop.landyworld.co.uk/land-rover-defender-wading-extended-axle-breather-kit---free-postage-4-p.asp Is there anything else I will need? Thanks
  9. Hello, This is probably a very noob-like question, but I have been reading about raised air intakes, but it would seem as though a snorkel to the air filter isn't enough, and you also need to take into consideration; axles, gearbox, transfer box and timing chest. I think for some of this its a simple case of buying a wading plug for the likes of the fly-wheel housing, but what do you do to the rest? If someone could explain or point me in the right direction that wold be great. Cheers, Ash
  10. Yep, I have a 1986 ex-mod 90, the chassis has had no welding, and needs none, I have owned it for about 10 months now, it cost me £1500. When I went to look at it I got underneath with a hammer and checked the whole thing, it was/is solid. Since I bought it I have had to spend £450 sorting the gear box, about £70 on new rear shocks and misc gaskets, and about a week of my own time repainting the body/axels and waxoyling the chassis, the guy that had it before had swapped the engine over for a 200tdi which pulls like a trooper. All in all its cost just over £2000 for a 90 in great condition, even though its 25 years old. I looked around for a while before I found this one, they are out there you just have to look.
  11. Wow, hulk it is then. Yeah I will just be buying from the web-site link that was posted. I have just have a price of £300 including postage for a gearbox, I wondering, seeing as that casing has broken and you haven't heard of that happening before, do you think it could be wise to be looking at a whole gearbox replacement? Or would that just be foolish? Ta
  12. Also just wondering, is this a common fault, or was I really turning into the incredible hulk with anger when I was trying to shift without use of a clutch??? Either way, Im glad (still hoping) that this means Im not going to have to raid a bank to pay for it now. Cheers
  13. Yee haw! The fasted lr4x4 web slingers in the west! Cheers guys, always in good hands here! Now I just have to find out if its a LT77/S, I suspect so. Really showing my ignorance to anything mechanical Cheers a bunch
  14. Hey, I posted about a week ago that I was having problems with my clutch and gear box, some of you may have read that, cheers for the comments left. Anyway, I nipped down to the garage as it has been a week, he's a one man shop so things always take a while, anyway, we lifted the plastic cover from where the gear stick goes down and holy carp!!!! I thought it would have been a screw that had popped out, or at worst that the lever was snapped, but get this.... (Need to explain...) On the top of the gear box where the two gear levers go, the casing has snapped between the main gear lever and the hi and low lever, I mean it has cracked/split and completely broken!!! I hope that you understand what Im trying to describe, because Im sure Im not doing a very good job of it?!?! So the box which holds the main lever is just broken from the rest of the box. Can this be replaced without replacing the whole gear box? :( :( :( :( :( :( Im speechless. Or, is there anyone in this part of Scotland (Moray, Aberdeenshire) with a gear box they are looking to sell (mind you, I was worried about the bill before, but now Im just soiling my pants!). So, if you have understood my ramblings, and you either know what Im on about or have a vague idea, can you please post some suggestions, as I haven't a clue! Cheers
  15. Hey, check out this link; http://www.allwheeltrim.co.uk/Frames.html and scroll to the bottom, it tells you about the header frames. Hope this sheds a bit of light on it, you will probably be able to have a good look and compare what you have. Ash
  16. Yeah Western, the pedal is moving up and down, the recovery guy said the same thing about the pushrod, is that a big/expensive job to fix? Im not so sure about the screw coming loose, as the gearlever was the same as it has always been, it just seemed to go loose/wobbly all of a sudden, I think I have broken something there as I was forcing it. Cheers Jason, that could be likely with the dust cover holding the fluid back, as a little fluid had gone, but it was only noticeable once I removed the cap to check the level. Fingers crossed for the gearlever being an easy fix. The guy who is working on the landy is a good bloke, plus its been a hobby of his doing up old landys so Im not worried about being stitched up or anything, the main worry is the cost of the fix, but so long as the gear box is sound it shouldn't be too bad Im guessing? Having said that I don't know how hard/easy it is to do any of the fixes mentioned above Cheers a lot
  17. Hey, no fluid dripping that I have seen, and I had a good look. Yeah Mark, sounds the same, it totally went, came back a wee bit, but I only had an inch or so of peddle working, then went completely I think I will be living in hope that it gets fixed for £50 though! Cheers
  18. Hello. Whilst driving the yesterday, I was shifting into 3rd when all of a sudden my clutch peddle went completely wobbly! There is no resistance to it at all. I was not far from a town so I thought I would shift through the gears whilst trying to time it. Anyway, I had not driven without a clutch before, and my timing was carp! Which unfortunately lead onto the next problem; So I shifting , without the clutch, coming up to a junction going down through the gears, Im getting a bit panicked (and very pi**ed off) when just like the clutch peddle my gear stick just goes totally wobbly (I was being forceful), just wobbling around all over the place! So Iv got a wobbly clutch peddle and a wobbly gear stick, I cant engage any gears what so ever (fortunately the landy is in neutral...Im assuming as it rolls freely ). So I got out recovery and got towed to my garage. Before this I was having no problems with shifting through the gears at all, 3rd has always been a bit stiff, but it has been like that since I bought it almost a year ago. I have serviced it regularly and the oils have always been clean, like I said there was no warning, one moment I was happly driving along (I may even have been singing along in the car! ), the next moment no clutch! And so on. Im just wondering if you guys have a prognosis of what you think could have happened, and perhaps an idea of how much you prognosis would cost to fix (thats the worrying part! (my garage is cheep on labor, bonus). Cheers for any impute Ash
  19. Hey, thanks for all the replys!! Darren; Cheers, I still ned to check the diameter, I think its the same, just over 70mm, but best to be sure. Nige; Yep thats it, ok, so the breathers, I can see in the pic that you have two pipes coming off, where do these go too, and do you know where can I order those parts from? Thats great, thanks to you all!
  20. Its a 200tdi fitted into a 1986 90, afraid I don't know what make of snorkel it is, I do remember the guy I bought the landy from saying it cost around £60, it has a few sections to it and fits through the top of the wing where the air vent bit is. Inside/under the wing the metal pipe has two holes which protrude out, which would make fitting a tube a bit tricky, I will try and post a pic of what I mean. Hey Darren, yeah I will measure it up tomorrow, cheers for that. Thanks for the replies.
  21. Hello, The previous owner of my 90 had fitted a raised air intake to it, but I think that it was just for the "bling" effect as he had not connected the filter to the snorkel. I have looked on the net for this part and it is coming out at £40 - £50!!! Crazy money as Im guessing that all it is is some flexible rubber hose, right? If anyone has used anything other then the £50 part can you let me know what you used? Im thinking of heading to a scrap yard and just getting some rubber turbo piping or something to connect it up, what do you think? Thanks for you thoughts.
  22. Hello, cheers for all the information. In the end I bought a connection lead (cost a bit though!!!!): https://www.thexmod.com/search_results.asp?search=FV324385-1&Submit3=Search and connected a civy 7 pin plug to the wires. So Iv kept the nato plug on the landy, and now connect the new lead from that to the normal civy light board for the trailer. Yeah "Range Rover Blues", not straightforward, but I just put the 2 break light wires into the 1 connector on the civy plug, and ran a second wire from the single sidelight wire, and it works no worries. Thnaks again
  23. Hello I have a NATO plug for trailers on my Landy 90, but I need to hook up to a standard connection, can I buy an adaptor as I would like to keep my 90 in military spec, if not is it easy to change the socket over? Thanks for yor help
  24. Its a 200tdi from a range rover classic, the guy before me had it fitted. Its definitely not the original engine, and definitely a tdi. OK, didn't know that. It goe's past 60mph, up and just past 70, but have to push, it gets bloody loud (but then again has no sound proofing anywhere!). Afraid I don't have a clue about the rev's. I will have a look at the transfer box sticker. Yeah, as I said Im just assuming that it was a 200tdi going by his registration, and yep I would think that every 90/defender has had something done in its day. I was just really wondering if my acceleration/top-speed sounded about right, give or takeou My post ts more of a query then a problem, as Im more then happy sitting at 50 and feeling comfy, Im not worried about it, I guess I just find it a bit comforting knowing my old 90 is in good health! Thanks for the replys
