  1. Good point, didn't think of that! Afraid that I don't know what the original engine was, the previous owner had it changed. Yep you could be right about the transfer box, military defenders do have different ratio boxes don't they??? And yes my tyres aren't standard, Im on the steel rims, but they are sized 255/65/16, more of a mud tyre then anything else. Deary me, I really should think before I type! Thanks
  2. I have owned my ex-mod 1986 '90 (with a 200TDI) for about 7 months now. The only other Defenders I have driven (all 200TDI's) have been work vehicles which have been fairly shot. I was driving behind another 90 the other day and it seemed to have way more power on accelerating and I was struggling to keep up with it (I am assuming it was a 200tdi because of its registration). Mine sits very comfy at 50mph, you can feel it at 60, and it doesn't seem to want to do much over 70, I recon it could...but I just don't push it. Getting it up to speed also seems to take a while. I gave it a full service a while back, and I have seen in the rocker box, no gunk, everything as it should be. Does what Im describing about the speed sound right to you guys? Short of messing and tweaking anything, would any of you recommend (or not) fuel additives to clean it through? And If so what one? Cheers
  3. Hello Jack. Cheers, I wont forget if I ever decide to sell! I don't have the roof or sides on yet as Im still looking for a rear door, but im in the process of sanding them down ready for a re-paint, sticking with the NATO matt-black. Did you manage to get the new skidoo out in the recent snow??? Checked the trigger, its not that so it must be the solenoid.
  4. No noticeable damage to the trigger or cable. I agree about the whole throwing money at things bit, but the motor was damage well and truly, so a new motor was in order anyway, and still with that there is no life, so I figured it must be the solenoid? The winch had apparently been sitting for 2 or 3 years with no use. Im a bit hopeless with electrics, how would I test the trigger itself? (I did pick up a sealed solenoid and motor very very cheep, Im not just throwing cash at problems!). Cheers.
  5. Cheers for the replys. Like I said I bought a new motor as the copper contacts had corroded and broken, I haven't tested the new motor in the way suggested above, but to be honest its new, so I wont bother, I ordered a new solenoid last night so Im keeping fingers crossed that is the problem, if not that, then may be its the trigger? Cheers for the replys so far!
  6. Hey. I think that I know the road you are on about, but I think that it is really only a "challenge" when the weather has been bad, ie; lots of snow. But IM going to try and find out more and I will post any findings. Retroanaconda your correct; you can walk anywhere, but any type of vehicle is not allowed unless you have permission from the land owner. The Corrieyairack Pass is now out of bounds, has been for the past few years. I was into dirt bikes for a while and tried to take one up there 3 years ago, the land owner had chained the road off and put straw bales in the way, the keepers saw me trying to get past and didn't try to make friends! So yeah, none of Wades road are allowed anymore. To be honest by starting this topic I was hoping that someone would just PM me and offer a rag around some farmland or something along those lines, living in hope really! Cheers and I will be sure to post any findings.
  7. Hey I was fortunate enough to pick up a Warn M8000 for free! It was owned by the company I worked for, but they said it had stopped working and were going to throw it out. Anyway, I rigged it up to my battery and it went first time, no worries, so Im thinking GREAT, a free working winch! 4 months later I finally bought a winch bumper, fitted it up, ready...thumb on the trigger...NOTHING. For a very short time there was some clicking, then it kicked into life, then nothing, it kicked in a few times, but now I cant get anything out of it, no clicks/buzzes/knocks - nothing. I just bought a new motor as the copper inside had corroded, but the new one has made no difference at all, still no noise, no clicks, nothing. Any suggestions? Is it a new solenoid that Im needing (I thought it would click if it was broken?). Thanks for any advice
  8. Cheers for that Raymond. Looks like a good place, a wee bit far but worth a trip for sure some day. If I find any land that can be used in our neck of the woods I will be sure to let you know. Cheers, Ash
  9. I had the same a while back, coming from the rocker box gasket, I think this is a common problem, oil was everywhere. Heres a helpful tip I learnt when I used to do up motorbikes; If I had an oil leak I would clean up the engine, and then cover it with a thin layer of talcum-powder, run the engine for 30 sec's or so, and have a look, it was fairly easy then to pin-point where the leak was. Hope you get it sorted
  10. Hey. Just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere I could do some offroading/greenlaneing in these parts. I rarely venture into forestry/estate areas, as I don't much enjoy not having the green light to drive in these places. Cheers, Ash
  11. Like the title says... Im looking for a Land Rover breaker call Roger, he used to be based just outside Aberlour, but has now moved over near Tomintoul. I went to see what bits he has laying around for a 90 (specifically a rear door), only to find that he had moved, unfortunately the person I found this out from only knew that it was somewhere near Tomintoul. If anyone knows where he is can you let me know please, then again if any of you are in this part of the world and have a rear door you don't want or could sell then let me know that as well! Thanks
  12. Now Im excited!!! Like a kid in a candy store!
  13. Nice one! I may be picking that up too then!??? Cheers Frax, will be in touch
  14. Hey. Before I start its a 1986 90. I recently had some problems with my electrics, so whilst I was busy sorting the problems I thought I would order some new fuse boxes (as I had noticed that some of the connectors had broken). Anyway, I received the fuse boxes, but the metal connector bits that hold the fuses arnt there (I guess thats just another way for them to make money!). Do any of you guys know where I can get these connector bits to fit into the fuse boxes please? Its the bits to fit into these boxes; http://www.britishparts.co.uk/.sc/ms/bdd/ee/4723/FUSE%20BLOCK Thanks for any help
  15. http://www.tyresdirectuk.co.uk/xcart/category_4x4.php Just got myself some new tyres from the above link, as far as I can see they are cheaper then anywhere else. Hope you find what you need, and have fun on that trip! Ash
  16. Hey Dave. Yeah I agree about the rear drums, they have been doing most, if not all the breaking for some time now I think, I did realise this, hence the reason for taking a good few miles to slow and stop before any junction or turn! I am also using the engine breaking, but not forcing that. Its all just meaning that Im driving really ssslllloooooooooowwwwwwwwwww at the moment. Having seen the prices of the callipers I need, Im gonna try and sort the callipers on it, but.....Im going to have to take it to my garage, I need it done quickly and I think that if I have a go then it may take some time! Cheers to you all for the help so far!
  17. Cheers Nick. I have been looking through and checking numbers, and I think that the calliper I need is RTC3380/3381, which is rubbish as I cant find any callipers of that code going for less then £100. Does any one know if I can use another calliper in on my landy (83-86)? Cheers again
  18. Hey GTI-90. Cheers for your reply, how much would you be looking for them? I could probably pop over at some point this week and collect if thats ok? Thanks a lot.

  19. Thats great thanks for the advice. I have checked my vin which begins AA, which means I think my 90 is a 1984-1986, so Im going to try and find the part numbers for that. Where would I find the axle number? As for the pad springs/pins, Im planning on doing everything that comes and comes with the brake units, it will be nice to finally have a stopping distance which is less then a cargo ship! Thanks, Ash
  20. Thats great cheers western. There are a few reasons Im replacing the lot, let me explain... I bought the landy last July, and didn't know anything about them back then! Fortunately for me the rest of the landy is amazing, no corrosion, (nearly) new engine, but even then I knew the front brakes were on soft side. On closer inspection around september time I realised that they had seized, and they looked as though they had been that way for some time (no shine what so ever to the discs, and some heavy pitting). Emergency pit stop to a garage about a month ago when a brake like broke, the guy say the front brakes - raised his eyebrows - and recommended that I "get the whole lot sorted". Looking at them today the discs are heavily corroded and pitted, and the callipers themselves look as though they would just crumble if they were breathed on! I bought the landy for my work - north of Scotland, forestry, out on dirt tracks the whole time. I didn't really plan to use the landy as a main get around, but Iv since been bitten by the landy bug, done it up (almost!), and sold my van. I had a scary moment in the snow the other week, you can guess what happens when only the back brakes work. Cheers.
  21. Hi, My front brakes are shot, and I am needing a full new set up, pads/discs/callipers, the lot. The trouble is I don't know the part numbers and I dont what to order a bunch of stuff to find that the pads I order don't fit the callipers etc, get what I mean? Can any of you give me a heads up on this please as I want to get my order in before the VAT rise. Thanks a lot
  22. Hey Frax, Im interested in the roof, do you have panels/rear door as well? No worries if not, gotta start somewhere! I live just up the road from you, near Rothiemay. Let me know if you want rid of the roof, I could nip round any time. Cheers, Ash
  23. The thought had crossed my mind, but I think if I suggested that then my life wouldn't be worth living!!!
  24. Cheers, all points taken, and I will get on the case. Happy new year!!!
