  1. I know its not the P gasket where the alloy casing joins to the block i have changed that and no evidence of water around the area. Core plug is wet but it is above that. It looks like its under the rocker cover area. Oil looks ok and water is ok. Could i have a crack in the block?? i have heard about these things. Many thanks
  2. These parts are both new and not leaking. Which is why i cant think of anything else. Its not localised its all down the side
  3. Hi all, I have water seeping down the side of the engine on my 300Tdi. It is not local enough to cause a drip onto the road but is obvious to see on the right hand side of engine (from front). Could this be a potential head gasket problem?? It is smoking a fair amount as well. Many thanks
  4. Hi all, Recently the lady has been smoking, on start up i used to get a puff then nothing which is pretty normal. But now when starting from cold it smokes a lot more and will keep smoking when i drive it getting worse when i accelerate covering the poor sod behind!! Also when i give it run down the dual carriageway or something then stop it continues to smoke. Furthermore when stopped for a while (eg petrol station) it will smoke even worse when i start driving again. Seems worse when the engine is working like towing boat up the slipway or going up the drive. Also MPG is down so my question is what things can i check or need changing. Fuel filter hasnt been changed for a while but not sure this will help. Air filter is new. Smoke is bluey colour so burning oil?? But oil level doesnt move!! Sorry for the unstructured questions just wrote things when i remember them. Many thank in advance
  5. I was in the same position as you with a coolant leak. Coolant was dribling down onto the sump. I got advice from here and changed the P - Gasket (got a metal one so three new fixings). It was my first job on the landy and i didnt think i could do it (didnt have the confidence) but i did. Hardest thing was shifting the power steering pulley as the tension of the belt didnt slacken it. Oh and i couldnt get the water pump to seal but that was my fault. Follw les's guide. Its a lot easier when your doing it rather than reading it for change!!
  6. Dont really have that much traffic around me to be honest, only in the summer where you might as well walk. Found low range good for car parks though just for a laugh. I had a practice today and still clunking. Tried a bigger blip and smaller blip and still a clunk. Need to keep trying me feels
  7. Thanks for the replies, just reading that extract from The Landrover Experience and it says just double de clutch the transfer box lever but wont this clunk?. Guess i will try today and see what happens!!
  8. its mainly for use with a boat on the tail - i have to go up a steepish long hill from the slip way so dont want to stop until i hit the flat. I guess double de-clutching is the way then!! So if i get it right i should hear no clunk?? Seems not many people use the technique much.
  9. Hmmm ok have never double declutched before so should be fun. When you let engine revs drop - if your going up a hill thats levelling off it must be difficult to keep speed. What is the idea behind changing that way?? Think i understand but would be great if you could explain.
  10. Afternoon all, I know it can be done as it says so in the manual BUT when i tried the other day i was going about 15mph dropped main gear stick into neutral clutch out - clutch in change from low to high then main gearstick back into gear. There was a clunk which didnt sound like it was right?? Also seemed to take me ages to do which surely is not the best thing when towing something heavy as by the time you have changed you need to change back again!!!! Question is whether the clunk (no synchromesh???) is as it should be and whether you are damaging the T-box by doing this. Cheers in advance
  11. right ok i will take prop off when i get a chance and then see whats whats. Which ones do you thnk i should change vibrations being around transfer box etc. Change one on the front and one on the back either side of the box??
  12. No i think the size is fine. Just cant work it out. Might not be being brutul enough when checking. What is 'play' defined as??
  13. Hi all, further to my post about month ago, vibrations seem to be getting worse. When in say 2nd at 20 MPH or when something is under pressure like 50 - 55mph up a hill on dual carriageway. I don't know if its gearbox which was new only 3 years ago and or original transfer box (1987)- maybe bearing (dunno know anything about this though) i have checked play in UJ's the best i can doesnt seem to move pulling and pushing resolves in no movement maybe i could go more brutal. If i put my head down it seems to be coming from gearboxes area and then moves back a bit behind bulkhead area. I drove down to PLymouth yesterday 60-65 was fine but i could be going too fast to increase frequency of vibration??? Not sure Any help appreciated. Cheers
  14. Not hyjacking just adding info. I will crawl under and check tomorrow with handbrake off as it would help will post again if i find any different. cheers
  15. ok will have another look i dont think i am being hard enough with testing for play cos its not obvious.
  16. Seems to be better - like i said in earlier post its worse when engine is slightly laboured - but 5th is especially bad with a quite definate drone - few pumps with the grease and fifth gear is now fine. However i am thinking more towards gearbox now as when i am going down hill in say 4th and then take my boot off the gas it vibrates worse than when accelerating!! What do you guys reckon?? Cheers
  17. Its strange Luke cos i grease every 800 - 900 miles being careful not to squeeze the seals out. I will give it a whirl and see whats whats. Will report back later on Cheers
  18. Guys, Have a vibration coming from somewhere and think its coming from around the gearbox area. I am hoping its not the gear box itself. Its worse when i accelerate when slightly laboured (being lazy) say 30 in 4th. If it is the UJ's whats a good way of checking for play???
  19. Back down in Devonshire now for weekend from Uni so will be out and about for more forecasted rain over weekend. Last night i ventured to the snowdome in Tamworth for a ski and the whole area was under water with various cars dotted over the car park. Noticed a Merc SLGAY which apparently has ben their since saturday!! I asked the shuttle bus driver how they got them out and he said " some very friendly landrover drivers used ropes and stuff " so was just wondering if any of you midlands forumeers helped out??
  20. Yeah i suppose so, just really wanted to stay green oval cos i absolutely love them. Hmmmm am stuggling a bit really, ideally i would love a 90. But for around a 1000-1500 not really happening
  21. Yeah in an ideal world that would be best just demand too much money still, with discos & series being cheaper that seems a better option.
  22. Guys and Gals, I know thats about as open question as it gets but i have a 300 90 at the moment and dont really want to go nuts in it as i need it for daily drive. So whats a good bet for a play thing?? I would like a disco but would have to have a mother of a trailer which i wouldnt be able to store. Maybe a series 2/3 but have never driven one and dont know about off road capabilities compared to that of say a 90 or a disco with diff lock. I dont have the expertise to really create a hybrid so want a base vehicle which i can adapt. I am ok with most stuff and learning?? Am thinking of doing this so i can have a free crack everything off road and if i break it then so be it!! Many thanks in advance.
  23. Have sorted it now, it was because the face wasnt dry the sealant was moving causing a slight gap which leaked under pressure. I dried it out and did it again and its all fine now. Thanks for all your help again!!
  24. so using the originals wont work then - what will leak the p - gasket or the water pump??
  25. No i didnt i just got a new gasket the p - gasket was fine this morning as i went out and brought it up to temperature then the annoying water pump leak. I put RTV round the p gasket so it should work the same for the wpump. To be honest i think that if i put the gasket on when its wet it should be ok but i will let you know tomorrow night!!
