Have been watching this thread seeing as i started it and it has gone crazy. I ask a simple question and end up with Pythagoras theorum. Good work though Gromit!! So double the JATE distance is the ideal strop/bridle length - magic!! Received the JATES today and have the fronts on just need to tighten them up. I have some for the rear aswell. How tight do the Nylocks need to be - FT setting!!
-
Criky this recovery business is complicated. Need a degree in Physics to understand loads and forces!! I have ordered genuine JATEs for front of the 90 just need a bridle and some shackles now. Any recommendations on where to buy from??
-
Excellent folks, great advice, i like LandyManLukes method of the strop through the tow rope. No more shackles to worry about. You could use a shackle in this case though couldnt you??
-
and the actual JATE ring attachment?? Through original lashing holes??
-
Can i simply replace the original lashing eyes on the front of the 90 with the JATES or do you manufacture your own holes??? sorry for the newbie q's!!
Many thanks

Excellent thanks chaps, with JATE rings would it be best to use a bridle??

Gents and Ladies,
Just wondering what set up folks have for their vehicles. I have a pretty much bog standard trcuk which i have had for a month and need some recovery points for the front as i have my first P&P in a couple of weeks. Anything i can do with the bumper IF the spreader plate is thick and big enough or will that still deform. What about a steering guard with intergral eyes are these man enough?? if so any makes and models?? I have a dixon bate at rear which is a plough i know but it will have to do for now!!
Many thanks for your help in advance

Unlucky for me, a focus decided he wanted to eat my tow bar!! Old guy that could hardly see. The bump felt like i was mounting a curb, his front bumper on the other hand was hanging off!! Oh well out to Brookwells for a new one courteous of the blind OAP.

Thanks for the replies guys, diff light is all working now thanks to a bit of cleaning and lubrication. It was caked in crud so now its all nice and clean to cake again. Atleast i know whats going on now!! Am learning!!

OK, i am new to landrovers only had it a month and a bit so how do i get to the switch? its on the top of the t-box, yes/no? its a learning curve for me so please bare with me!!

Guys, I know its a newbie question but my diff lock was working pukka after gentle persuasion then i went on holiday for 2 weeks come back and cant get the light to come on. The guy who had it before never used low range or diff lock which i guess is why it seized. How can i access and free/ clean the contacts to enable the diff lock to work. I can here it 'engaging' when diff lock lever is pushed across but no light, does this mean its not engaged?? I have checked the bulb!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi all, is their a difference. Just bought a 90 full rebuild on new chassis and was wondering if the chassis differ at all. Rear cross member is different i believe??
Also i have been told it has anti roll bars fitted where should i be looking for these?? and i guess i should remove them for more articulation off road??
Sorry for the noddy questions.

Just recently got my first landy on Friday loving it!! but it has or has had an oil leak. The pipe highlighted is caked in oil but dont know if its the cause of the leak. I am just getting to grips with it so bare with me for the slightly noddy style questions.
Many thanks

Thanks guys for the reply. Yes the gear lever is in the wrong place (inline with transfer lever). Went for a drive beautiful low high and diff lock all good. So fingers crossed we will see what happens.
How do you get round the gear situation then with them being opposite to in a disco??
-
Guys and Gals,
Going to look at a 1987 300 90 with all disco running gear tomorrow. As the disco gearbox has been used doesnt this mean the levers are in the wrong place for the 90?? What are the signs to look out for this conversion. Not worried about engine just the rest of the running gear. Back axle has been used from a Disco aswell so will this give it 1.22:1 ratio for the diff??
What will happen to the T-box can the standard def one be used??
Sorry for the noddy questions
Many thanks

Yeah its a 300. Excelent i will go and get one. Its not coming in till next year for the MOT i got told by an MOT station.
Many thanks.
-
Hi all,
What can be done about the self cancelling of the indicator within the steering wheel in order to make it work. Is a complete new setup needed? I hear this has to be fixed before MOT's now which is a nightmare although this might not be implemented before next year.
Many thanks

Oh no thats a bit of a mere!!
Was the 90 a good buy or not??
What about this 500 quid deposit thingy what happens about that. From i a have read you pay when registering in order to bid?? So if your not bidding its free??
-
Cheers Guys yeah i think i will have a look and see whats around. Where else can you suggest for lower price defenders. I posted earlier this year about what to buy but am still struggling!! Looking 300 or maybe 200 around 4000.
-
Guys,
Am not new to the auction scene, well cars anyway but no one really seems to talk much about Brightwells auction. I see its advertised in LRO so might take a trip up their for a look. I believe you have to register for £500 bucks deposit and if you dont buy you get it back. How does this work if i take my father in law with me, does he pay to, and why do you have to pay a deposit??
Anyway, i have looked at a fair few Defenders over the last year or so but cant justify paying silly money. What do you reckon to buying at auction??
I know their are no test drives which is a pain but anything else??
Many thanks

Guys,
Not sure what my grandad is after for his Disco so i will try my best to explain. He has seen a one piece headlight assembly for a 300??
Dont know if their is such a thing, but if their is where can you get them??
Someone must know what he is after - afterall you guys know your stuff!! I have only just started!!
Cheers
-
Cheers for that JST. Will go down the defender 200 route if i can find one. If not then Disco 200 or 300.

Spose not but that why i posted the topic. I wanted to know what everyone thought!!! People are obviously biased but it gives me some idea of whats going on. Prob go for a TD and then Tdi later when i get the time/money.
-
Dear all,
Only my second topic posted but got a great response to my first post about best method of buying. So it looks like a N/A or TD 90, then do a Tdi conversion. The question i want to ask is the difference between disco 200tdi/300Tdi engines and defender 200's and 300's. Whats the difference and what should i try and source for a conversion. I understand general fitting of 200Tdis are easier than 300's as they use the existing N/A mounts (is it the same for TD's???).
Many thanks

Steering Guards - and other underbody protection

Gents ad Ladies,
Went off roading for the first time on Sunday, had an awesome time but need to sort my vehicle out so i can attempt some more challenging things. Firstly i am looking at a steering guard. What is best steel or aluminium i am guessing aluminium because its lightweight and stong (around 8mm). Secondly do i go for 1 piece or 3 piece perforated or solid?? and also where do i get them from? i know everyone does them but what company do you use/ has a good name for reliability etc.
Secondly is it worth buying a sump guard aswell and?? i am getting diff guards front and rear and rock sliders then working my way up to snorkel and lights!!!
What other neccesities should i have??
Many thanks
