  1. There are a few bolts but mainly lots of rivets that need either grinding or drilling out.

There are also half a million spot welds scattered around that need drilling out.

I will bolt it all together when i am done to aid removal in the future.

You will need to drill the rivets out for the tub brackets from underneath.

  2. My concern with the wheel nuts was that the studs were not long enough to allow the nuts travel for the full length of their thread. It would seem that is not the case and it is acceptable.

But as i need full set of 5 tyres i will pick up some new rims at the same time.

  3. Regarding the wheel nuts i was going to change the wheels simply because i don't like the look of them. Its good to know it was at least safe to drive the way it was.

How do i find out the build date of the Landy? The chassis number is 90105474A.

I think the "901" refers to the first year of manufacture i belive and the "05474" is the build number as it came of the production line and the "A" is the model revision.

    Or am i wrong?

  4. Looking through the small of history i got with it was a receipt for a bottom end rebuild and it did say on the report that there was heavy wear. I'm not going to waste any time on that engine as it's scrap.

I know it's been a bit of a disaster so far, and you have every right to be P'd-off (although you don't sound like you are),

TBH i wasn't p'd off so much but disappointed because i thought i got a right bargain.

Quite a tidy early s3, is it tax exempt?

Afraid not, although it is an "A" suffix and it was first registered in Feb 1973 so it requires road tax.

200Tdis are all well and good, but the 2.25 petrol is very underrated I find. There should be plenty around so easiest option is probably just to swap the engine.
I hope you keep the old girl standard and not ruin it by putting a tdi in it.

You guys have read my mind, i will be on the look out shortly for a 5 bearing 2.25 petrol engine and i will probably go a LPG kit in the near future.

But before the LPG i will need to buy some new wheels and tyres as these Disco rims are not even fitted with longer studs....the thread doesn't even make it to the end of the nut !!!

  5. Bought for the sum of £900 with a years mot.

The engine blew up on the way home and ended up being towed back by the wifes Freelander!!! :o

Then the front tyre died and i found out that it had no jack or wheel brace and the spare was no good!

The Mrs and the kids were up till 3am because of me...Let's just say they are NOT happy.

I think some pics are in order.

  6. Emptying it after every trip will soon get boring.

This is the approach i used to take when i owned my previous defenders... Just don't put anything in there in the first place so you don't have to remove it.

And i've known someone to have their window smashed to steal an empty packet of fags that were left on the dashboard!
