  1. I hope so, but when you have judges stating their admiration for the bravery of burglars, it doesn't give much hope in the judiciary.

Their admiration turns to venomous hatred once they have been the victim of such a violating crime where you begin to fear being in your own home or owning the car of your dreams, the same too can be said of members of a jury!

We had over the back gate visitors here when I first moved home, to see if there were any goodies left out in the locked back garden with it's 6 foot surrounding fence, needless to say encountering the border collie told them it was a bad idea, mum doesn't have a dog, but I do ;)

I liked the air bag triggered by the owner trick, a lot of trackers have immobilization features, the one I saw was wired to the steering wheel bag, send the tracker a message and pop goes the bag. Very illegal in any country, but then again, so is theft!

Where is the harm in a bit of sport? If it's ok for them to attempt to steal our property, it should also be ok for us to attempt to protect it.

Saw alarms on internal batteries with shielded sirens, wired to roof mounted strobe beacons, that seemed a good idea.

  2. Trouble is a lot of folk think factory locks are sufficient.

Most people are too lazy to buy let alone regularly use security devices until they've had theirs pinched.

It's not just vehicles but the accessories that are being stolen too, I posted this http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=96579 late last year when high value winches were being targeted weekly.

Until the laws are reversed on reasonable force being used against thieves they'll continue to steal our stuff.

  3. It drives me up the wall too.

As much as I love the views during the day I do also enjoy night laning for the fact you can feel so much more isolated. And the fact that everything is different in the dark.

No I'm not disputing the excitement factor, but it's the going out unprepared that bugs me!

    Si, you old dog lol

  4. It seems poignant to ask this after reading yet another, "I'm stuck on a lane, bogged to the axles, oh and it's 10:30pm", post.

For those who don't do Facebook, you are spared the despair of reading such posts.

    But I don't get it, why go out;

    a) at night

    b) ill equipped

    c) driving unfamiliar terrain at night

I go solo laning exclusively, much less hassle with other parties enjoying the countryside just as I am, been out in groups but it's not my bag, I like to bimble along in 1st/2nd gazing through the trees or admiring the views of our diverse landscapes, too many drivers believe they're in a rally or something which defeats my objective in going laning.

I think my vehicle is well maintained and suitably equipped, winch, rope, strops, axe, bow saw and a shovel, I also have normal gear stowed like a torch with spare batteries, extra boots, spare clothes and a charger for my phone, essentials like bulbs, first aid and fire extinguisher live permanently in the car.

Can anyone understand why these folk go off (commonly with female companion) to green lane at night and in vehicles with little more preparation than bigger wheels and snorkels that aren't connected.

Sign of my age noticing indifference to others perhaps?

  5. And by the time you have done all that you will have a clearer idea of your future together

    cheers

If it's anything like Sean's D2, he took tank off just as advised by me and ended up replacing the rear chassis rails from the rear springs back and is 6months into saving for a galvanized chassis to replace the whole thing.

Bargain D2 for £1800 turning into endless money pit rapidly.

  6. Just be mindful of what you actually want from your new vehicle.

Don't get too excited over add'ons, the best thing to do is to bring it first upto scratch mechanically, things like replacing clutch fluid, replacing brake fluid, gearbox fluid has an overly long service schedule, as do the diffs and transferbox. The Discovery 2 has a reputation for rotten rear chassis, spending time removing the fuel tank and applying preservatives, painting and chassis internal waxing is time better spent than mooning over the must have in this months LRO.

Making your new vehicle uber reliable should be top priority ;)

  7. Isn't it odd how JLR is following BMWs philosophy with the X series vehicles, different sizes of the same thing.

Progress is a must but the latest gimmicks are just that, even more stuff to go wrong :(

  8. Best advice is go to a book shop buy a few Ordnance survey maps for your area and surrounding and look them up, great fun, I prefer to lane solo, although some feel it's irresponsible to go out alone I find much less animosity to be had when encountering walkers and such.

Just make sure you're well prepared and go off with your flask an baitbox an have a good time.

How well prepared is your truck?

  9. Thanks for all the advice about the swap! Is there anything I should check or change while I have the replacement box off the car? Its code is 28D381718E. I'm thinking a cross drilled input gear? New seals as well, also should I get bearing for the new input gear? If so are they an easy change?

    Cheers

    S

The advice I was given was to do a partial rebuild, as in, cross drilled input gear, input seal, do the intermediate shaft O rings(look for "intermediate shaft bodge" as you only change one!) output bearings and seals.

Apparently it's not that hard :o

Not got my spare apart yet to say for sure!

  10. I have lived on the Island for the past 9 years and have run some greenlaning trips for mates some years in the summer months. as said above there are enough that don't have a full time TRO on them tio make a full day of it plus pub lunch if u take the scenic routes. That being said ALL the lanes get a temporary TRO on them during the winter months and rain dependant don't re-open until MaY or June. So no point coming over til then. You will also need to plan the route carefully as the coast road over the back past ventnor towards gangbang chine is shut as its falling away.

All the TRO's on open/closed lanes are listed on the council website.

    Cheers

    Willo

Cheers for that, if you have good experience of the lanes there, perhaps you'd be interested in meeting up and doing a guided tour?

  11. Tbh Nige I hope it does get a vosa tug cos that is ridiculous,it is exactly what the current points system was designed to stop ,I can never understand going to all that hassle to avoid paying a bit of road tax and an MOT fee !

James, I never understood the whole dodging road tax thing over here when series became exempt in 96, if we paid taxes here like I did in NL I could, but a couple hundred quid is a tenth of what I paid there!

Ironic really that they pay over the odds for tax exempt vehicle, spend more than it's worth getting it to be the Defender they actually wanted and do so mostly knowing they are breaking the law just to save a few quid.

But in a way you're right, VOSA tug and a bit of publicity might scare a few into doing the right and legal thing?

Although, I considered trying to cheat the system in NL it would have paid itself within 2yrs, I worked out a guy doing the same here would be waiting 11yrs before hs tax exempt conversion started paying him back.

  12. Done.

There were some strange choices available, I suppose some people don't want see the countryside as it really is.

Quite true, also there seems to be a growing idea that the countryside should be open to everyone, and that it is socially acceptable to enjoy outdoor life and pursuits, just not vehicular users (quite sure this has been this way for a long time but i am seeing it more than ever lately)
