  1. In real braking there is no seeming loss of efficiency and it pulls up evenly enough, it can still lock all 4 wheels on tarmac too, it is just the oddness from the brake balance on a the test rollers, I was tempted to stick the diff lock in and let it jump out so he had to do a brake "feel" but I am and forever will be of a curious nature.

Probably look for a set of calipers to rebuild.

  2. Will add that we off road a lot too, almost every day with farm track that I live on and tracks round our yard.

Might be inclined to think sticking caliper and that stainless pistons and resealing might be in order?

  3. What do you use it for?

Unless you tow a lot and drive mountains there's not much point in going over standard, like wise, silty mud eats pads and chews up discs, standard = cheap.

160 ain't much, guvs RS6 is 560bhp and rockets past 300kmh, that thing needs the fancy ceramic discs and pads, just concentrate on bleeding it properly and getting a good pedal, my D1 can lock all 4 wheels on tarmac, just remember to ask yourself why you want uprated, is it because you want, or because you need?

  4. Whilst in for the APK (Dutch MOT) I observed some strange braking behaviour, I am old school and never use the brakes unless I have to, the rollers enabled me to watch as the tester did a series of tests to ascertain brake performance, a sharp stamp for Estop saw a marginal 30% difference in left and right on the front brakes, as he is a friend and knows the vehicle very well we did some experimenting, a gradual pressure up to locking the wheels saw even braking, pretty much 50/50 and Estop straight after saw same result.

    But why?

Fluid is less than a year old as I like to change it every 2yrs.

No sign of pulling when I do brake.

    Any ideas?

  5. Oh yes, I change it every 5,000kms so it's always fresh.

But for me it was enlightening to hear a true sales pitch on Total oils vs unbranded but meeting "XY&Z".

I've run a flushing additive a couple times too, added a can of supercharge stuff from Wynns on every change and once I fix the oil leaks it's getting a tube of slick50.

  6. You have to remember lots of people are not interested in mechanics, they don't know the common pitfalls of a particular car. They buy a car they want to tow a horse with or whatever with an mot with no advisories and don't contemplate that it could be that bad.

I agree with buyer beware with used cars and if I bought one without looking underneath and at the next mot it needed a few hundred quids worth of welding I'd think fair enough but I don't see how that car can have gone from mot to mot without it being flagged unless it wasn't a genuine mot or they were going to good lengths to hide it.

Of course it's still the owners problem which is why it really amazes me is how many people buy cars off eBay and pay for them without seeing them. I had a friend that sold a bog standard 10 year old 206 on ebay and the people drove 6 hours to get it and 6 hours back - for a 206?!

I got really lucky with my V8 Disco, bought unseen, I was 1000 kms away, paid for it and had it delivered to me in Belgium.

I just found this particularly annoying as there is no way it was safe!!! Imagine putting 2000kilo on the hook an set off for Spain for summer hols to find you left caravan and half the chassis behind after tanking diesel.

  7. Thing is when you total up parts etc a chassis swap goes north of 2k

Say you paid 3,000 for it all clean and tidy then this, that makes it a 5,000 car and insurmountable ball ache involved in repairs and unknown work involved, this isn't like the turbo going pop after 5,000 miles! It's really rather serious and devious!

  8. Just seen a right hash of a job on faceache, a D2 chassis that is horrendously rotten and so badly repaired that the shock mounts ripped out at 70mph says the poster.

Unable to post a link on this thing but if you are a fb member please post link or screens of pics.

My question is really, as a private person, what can you do? It can clearly be seen how bad it is/was, but it was just plain dangerous and not at all very well repaired.

Can you claim liabilities against seller even if it was a private person not a garage?

It needs re-chassis and it'll live but, there must be some kind of come back for selling something so dangerous!

  9. Try thishttp://workshop-manuals.com/ford/transit_2006.5_04.2006/mechanical_repairs/3_powertrain/308_manual_transmission-transaxle_clutch_and_transfer_case/308-00_manual_transmission-transaxle_and_clutch_general_information/diagnosis_and_testing/general_procedures/gearshift_cable_adjustment_vehicles_with_mt82-mt-75/

Not familiar with the MT 82 but it was fitted to a bunch of Ford vehicles, maybe a visit to local Ford service center to get a look at the actual tool? That transmission was also fitted to RWD transit vans and Ford Mustang so help from Ford should yield something.

  10. A very long time ago we used air powered guns for bearings on conveyors - great till they break, then man they spread grease from pole to bloody pole! My favourite grease gun is a little brass 1950's one handed thing (I inherited it) that just does prop UJs and is bullet proof

I had one too until Fredrik the plank ran it over with the loader :(

Would love another if I ever found one.

  11. I was in a tank station today, diesel and thought might be good to change the oils before the big trip back.

Now, I thought one of the many ideas behind Europe was to achieve a certain standard for products, my attention today was oil, I winced at the 45euro for 5 litres and decided to just do at the garage next week when over with Erik for the annual APK.

But, if an oil meets specific SAE regardless of branding, they should all be essentially the same shouldn't they?

I ask as the attendant was busy telling me how cheap oil is xyz and the new Total ultimop was the dogs ddanglies in oils.

SAE is SAE? Or is there an underlying standard?

  12. If you saw how much we've shed these last weeks to enable a 1 car load trip with two adults, two dogs, my tools and only our clothes, the Vehicle side was the only issue to ponder.

Yes the thoughts of selling it off had been fully discussed, but much like moving from BE to NL, it was an exercise in paperwork, back on the rock it has to be easier, I can read the forms without Google Translations.

Having called the DVLA today about it, they were happy with allowing my Dutch registration stay until a UK registration was issued, timeline would be about right with 6weeks and de-registration in NL by 11/04 to ensure no tax penalties as obligation ends with the registration.

Although, we are contemplating mothballing it for a cheap run around the first half year or so.

  13. No, not unreasonable, but as with all letters sent out to customers, the aim is to seem helpful without admitting any liability, sorry is an admission of sorts and couple that to a nifty five hundred pound an hour lawyer and your on a winner with claims and damages etc,

Land Rover is currently status, it used to mean something else, the new buyers market is upper middle classes, anyone winced at the price of even low end specced vehicles?

They priced themselves away from working classes a long time ago, We as enthusiasts keep our dinosaurs alive with revitalization parts and love, modern society is a consumer based beast with disposable attitude, today's top end luxury RR

    is tomorrow's white goods.

Shame but, a return to valuing customers just aint gonna happen, a mate works in LR Hasselt, he tells the workshops service dept is backlogged by 6 weeks, no way they're willing to do freebies or even glance in your direction on 125/hr labour rates!
