  1. I should of said I checked the timing belt it was my first thought when it wouldn't turn over.
  2. I though about the crankcase being full with water and not allowing the pistons to go down but it's not the oil level is still the same as it was. It seems the water has just sat on top of the piston in number 4. I didn't actually tow it or try to bump start it just tried to move it a few feet with the winch. I'll try soaking the bore with oil or diesel and see what happens. Thanks very much for the replies I really didn't think it would be the piston stuck thought it was something in the bottom end.
  3. Hi all and a merry Christmas. I've got a question about a freelander engine, I'm posting here hoping more people will see it and offer some advice as it's about an engine problem and it's really got me scratching my head!! but if admin feels the need to move it to the freelander section that's fine. My dad's 2005 1.8 freelander has been parked up for 4 weeks and the engine has locked up like its seized!? The car ran faultless before being parked up! He thought the starter had packed up on it when it wouldn't start as it was just clicking so a new one was fitted but still the same clicking happened. I've been to have a look at it and the starter didn't turn the engine at all so I took it off and tried it on the bench and the starter worked fine, I then put the car in gear and tried rocking it and it wouldn't move so I took all the spark plugs out, cylinders 1,2 &3 was fine but 4 was full of coolant (it's never used a drop of coolant and really was running perfect before being parked up) So the next thing I did was fitted the starter again and tried to turn it over to force the water out and it still wouldn't turn over. I've even tried pulling it with the winch on my defender and the freelander in gear just to see if the engine would turn and it doesn't the wheels just skid! So can anyone offer any thoughts as to why the crank would lock up solid after standing for only 4weeks? Its really got me stumped! TIA Rich
  4. Thanks for that I'll go pick the gearbox up now!
  5. I've done lots of searching but can't seem to find an answer, so my question is will an r380 gearbox from a discovery 2 td5 fit a defender td5? I can find loads of info about 300tdi r380 discovery boxes and fitting them to defenders but not about td5. The gearbox in my 2002 td5 defender has seized and I need a new box quickly to get it back on the road but can't find one locally, I can find several from td5 discovery's at reasonable money (I'd like a to buy a recon box from ashcrofts but funds won't allow it!) So will one fit, what mods would I have to do to get one to fit? Anyone know? Cheers Rich
  6. Thanks all, with regards to the speedo I know it's reading correct within a few mph as I've checked it with gps. I did think about a 1.2 ratio box as I've got a couple of discovery's here I could take one out of, but I've got a set 33" tyres I was gonna put on it and when they was fitted to my discovery with a 1.2 box the lower gears were still to high when I got in some sticky stuff and I don't want the same issue with the 110. Maybe it's just normal for a td5. Cheers
  7. Hi all. I've recently bought a 2002 td5 110 double cab and I love it but there's something that's puzzling me! After owning several 90/110's with 200/300tdi's fitted and td5 discos this double cab is the slowest (top speed) I've ever had! It's not the engine that has loads of power and from a standing start it absolutely flies, it seems to do 10mph in all gears before it's revving its head off and so 50mph is all it will do before I'm scared to push it anymore because it's revving so high! The clutch is fine I've just replaced it along with a new dmf as it was slipping abit when I bought it. This leads me to it being gearing,I've jacked it up and rotated the wheels and counted the rotation of wheel and props and it seems to have standard 3.54:1 diffs, the gearbox and transfer box was rebuilt in 2012 (long before i bought it) and both work fine but although the transfer box says 43d 1.4 ratio I'm wondering if the gears have been changed when rebuilt? Is there any way I can check the ratio without taking the transfer box out? I'm running 267/75 16 BFG at's so a standard size tyre so it's not that and it's not in low box as that all works fine and it does 25mph in 5th gear in low. Any help would be really appreciated with this as I'm struggling to keep up with traffic on major roads so i avoid them which is a pain! Cheers Rich
  8. Thanks very much for the help i'll give them a try.
  9. Can anyone recommend a garage/mobile mechanic service able to diagnose abs/traction lights on a 2000 td5 discovery in the watford area? Ive sold the disco and it's just my luck the lights have came on as he's arrived home in it! I've told him i'll try and find someone to plug it in as i want to help him get it sorted but i'd rather not pay main stealer prices if i can help it. Any help will be gratefully recieved Cheers Rich
  10. Some weeks he has events on there, there's several clubs hold trial's on the site, If something on you can go spectate but not drive. It's best to ring and make sure, I know it's open this sunday but its still best to ring on friday to confirm you can get in as he only lets a certain ammount of motors on the site.
  11. Hi Me and a few mates go there quite a bit as its only just up the road from us (about 10 minutes), It's a good site not huge but there's plenty of things to try and some bits are very deceiving, look easy but a lot of the site can be quite a challenge especially after a bit of rain! There's not alot of water to play in but there's plenty of mud to make up for it. We might be there this Sunday haven't decided if we're going to Three Holes or Tixover yet. Go and try it, i'm sure you wont be disappointed! regards Rich
  12. it lives!!! Removed the return line on the head and switched the ignition on and just let the pump run a couple of times, repeated the bleeding cycle and it started! I also now have a completely silent fuel pump as a bonus!? I was starting to get worried and was thinking it could be something else but now i know what to try next time! Thanks for the help and suggestions! Rich
  13. Hi Bear this is my first td5 so they are new to me too,i'm begining to think i should of stayed with my 300tdi 90! Ive slackened off the pipe that goes into the drivers side rear of the head where the return fuel line also comes out and its got plenty of air free diesel there. realy cant work this out now.
  14. just had the filter off again and turned the key and theres loads of fuel coming from the filter housing and the filter was full of diesel, checked the seals were ok and refitted ran through the bleed sequence half a dozen times and it still wont start! The tank is half full of diesel so there's plenty in there. The idea of placing a clear piece of tube in the fuel lines to see if there is air in the system sound good but all the fuel lines have proper plastic clips and i cant see how i can fit a piece of pipe in. this is driving me mad now should be such a simple job and its nearly 24 hours since i started the filter change!
  15. is there anything i can do to check it, or is it just replace it? quite surprised a genuine pump has failed after 2 months!
  16. Ive tried it several times was trying for a couple of hours and still no joy It's the intank pump that was replaced just before i got it, and its that pump that makes the whining noise.
  17. Evening all, I've done a diesel filter change on my td5 discovery (year 2000 model)today and now cant get it to bleed. I filled the new filter with diesel before fitting to try to minimise the ammount of air in the system but now it wont start. I've followed the bleed sequence of turn the ignition to position 2 pump the throttle pedal from idle to full 5 times within 10 seconds so the ecu does the bleed sequence then full throttle and try to start when the engine management light stops flashing but still no joy! Ive also tried the ignition off for 15 seconds then on for 3 minutes repeated 6 times and still no joy. i then thought it might be a dodgey filter so tryed refitting the old filter as it ran fine before but still it wont start. Can anyone offer any help on what i can do to get it to bleed as i'm at a total loss as to what to try next! I've only had the disco a few weeks and just before i bought it it had a new genuine diesel pump fitted 09/2010 (the previous owner provided the reciept) but it seems noisy,it whines constantly when driving, is it possible the new pump is faulty even though the engine runs great with plenty of power, well it did before i changed the filter!? Any advice greatfully recieved Rich
  18. The tick over seems to of sorted itself out now its ran for a while it just seem's to be running very rich.
  19. I've recently bought 4.6 hse p38 thats been standing unused for a while, The engine runs nice and smooth when warm but wont tickover and has to be held on the throttle to stop it stalling,it also stinks of petrol like its over fueling and throws black watery soot out of the exhaust. Has anyone had any experience with any of these problems before as i dont realy know where to start to try and sort it out. I've got very little experence of v8 engines and the management systems so any help appreciated!
  20. I have used them a few times through the ebay shop and cant fault them. Everything i have ordered has arrived next day and they are very helpfull on the phone. I would certainly buy from them again.
  21. Thanks for the reply's. I'm going to run a relay and switch for each fan so i can have one or both running as needed.
  22. can anyone tell me what amperage relay i will need for two 10" cooling fans please?
  23. This is the 4th time i've seen it listed in the last few months!
  24. I've just replaced a Discovery boot floor with an alloy one and it failed the retest for it and i had to take it out and put a steel one in! It failed because it was riveted in not welded and apparently that is not an acceptable repair, there was no mention about the seat belt mounts because as stated above the mounts are on the cross member not the floor. I queried the testers reasons and he showed me a section on the computer that said to pass a test it needed to be seam welded in.
  25. is it ok to come and spectate/ have a look round at this challenge?
