  1. I teach for my sins so i get to see allsorts - in fairness to the place a small minority give everyone a bad rep also the decline in manufacturing has not helped with wellworthy and cellophane closing but at least its not so smelly.

Its quite interesting - I get about on 5 or 6 different forums and have recieved quite a number of pm,s about the said company!! I am obviousley not alone on this one.

  2. well i've found the explanation- selectcase lives in bilgewater, and us somerset lot know what that means!!!

it means he'll only have to leav it a few days before the vehicle's half inched anyway

(ok for those of you that live in brigey, i know it's a lovely place, and it's getting better than a saturday night in Taunton, etc etc, but i'm still going to wind you up about it's reputation- although thinking about it i know of at least 4 forumeers in Bilgewater now so maybe i;d better shut up)

Now thats just underhand  You just seen the worst bits - I live just outside and its allright, why do you think i do all my shopping on the internet.

  3. Sorry but i was told how friendly and helpful they are - this is NOT the experience i have just had.

I had problems on a 200 tdi head and was going to ask them to do a recon head for me - I telephoned up and started to politley explian that the inlet valves suppled to me by my local engineering firm appeared too small a diameter, and could they do a complete recon for me but i only got as far as talking about the valves when the guy just said and i quote

"can i stop you there, I am on my dinner hour and you need to speak to the people who supplied you the parts" end of conversation

Sorry but this is appauling service - yes i could speak to the supplier of the valves but i wanted to speak to the so-called experts in the field and arrange for them to do the work for me - if its his dinner hour then dont answer the phone and there is no need to stop me in mid sentence and basically infer that i go away and am waisting his time.

I will be using L.E.G.S in future - much more polite and better service - I will NEVER use or recommend this companyand have not exagerated in the slightest

  4. Its my fault really for not specifing o.e. manufacturer parts - i think these are "allmakes" they came in a blue/white box with pcitures of 3 interlocking cogs and cost about £5 each all in.

It just shows how poory pattern parts are manufactured - i will have to source some o.e.ones - brit-car do them for about £8 quid eash the genuine ones are closer to 18 + vat

I will check the exhaust ones as well they looked ok but its better to check

I noticed that the pattern ones are closer in size to the 300tdi specs so maybe they are boxed incorrectly, there are no part numbers on them.

  5. I am rebuilding the cylinder head on my 200tdi & I have noticed while grinding them in that the new valves have a very - very small contact area on the valve seat probobly about 1mm. I have checked the part number and its correct at err1157 but measuring the head diameter the old one measures 39.5mm and the new is 38.92. the new valves were supplied by a reputable supplier btw

  6. I know its easy for me to state the obvious but many 200tdi's go over the belt change interval without damage.Surley there must be other factors that are making your belts fail? i see you are using genuine parts so no problems there. Just a thought but what about the tensioning method, I see you use one of the draper angular guages but maybe try one of the expensive dial type guages (beg borrow or hire one) perhaps the 200tdi is really sensitive to belt tension. another problem i have heard of before is a very, very slightly bent con rod which can set up undesirable vibrations or perhaps pully damage that is not immeadiatly noticable? there does not seem to be a lot of oil contamination but there does look to be a lot of dust in there that has come from somewhere.

    just a few thoughts

how many miles are these belts lasting out of interest?

  7. A mate of mine told me that dishwashers make great parts cleaners!!! Ive just had my 200tdi cylinder head skimmed & pressure tested but it has a few pieces of crud on the outside and i want to wash out the injector ports

what do you reckon - in the dishwasher with a finish tablet or am I temporarily insane

ps should i use rinse aid - if my wife sees this post i am dead meat

  8. All turbos old and new spin between 150 and 200 thou rpm and accepted and the variable type may be untouchable and balancing cannot be done but if its just your seals that are blowing why cant it be a diy option? there are no special tools required and doing a search on the net it seems a lot of people have done this.

Please send me the link for a company that can rebuild my turbo for under £200incl as I am interested

  9. I was browsing ebay the other day and came across a company selling genuine garrett turbo rebuild kits for around £50 - I was always led to believe this was strictly a specilist job but looking around the net there are a number of guides on how to strip/clean and replace the bearings & seals.

I know that shaft/impellors have to be specially balanced but apart from that the rest looks quite easy and of course if your shaft has sufferd no damage it should not need re-balancing anyway

not a bad option and could save you around £250 - anyone tried one of these? the company has a good feedback rating 100% over 300 purchases

no doubt there will be various opinions and if you can afford it go the recon route etc what do you think?

  10. I am rebuilding my 200tdi and was going to get a new head cos both of the ones i had have small cracks around the injector/heater ports.

Took it to an engineering shop and they said its very common and not to worry too much but back to your question they did a vacuuum test on the valve sealing for free and i just needed a skim and pressure test as the valve seats and guides are fine.

I am going for new valves, springs, caps, and colletets plus a head bolt set with the head skim and test it comes to around £220

if you are taking it off i would take it to an engineering shop who can test the valve sealing in about 10 minutes

  11. If you allready have a td prima to hand then that may well be the way to go - I think the conversion kits about £400

200tdi is tempting but make sure you see the engine running or get it from a realible source as rebuilding one can get expensive - you can get a decent disco 200tdi for about £400 then add about £70 for a cambelt kit and then there are the exhaust issues

  12. I think the 300tdi engine mountings are further forward meaning fabricating new engine mountings(i could be completley wrong here). the disco 200tdi will go in with no engine mods because the injection pump is mounted higher but the exhaust is a pain because of the lower mounted turbo. the defender 200tdi avoids the exhaust issues as the turbo is higher mounted but the injection pump is mounter lower meaning modified engine mounting on that side. the front timing belt covers are differant on disco/defender 200tdi,s so if you get a defender high mounted turbo&manifold and try to fit it to the disco it will foul the alternator etc.

    hope that helps

    will

  13. It just isnt my day with these engines <_< I have 2 heads and both have cracks -

one has cracks between the valves and hairline cracks going out from the injectors/heater plugs

the other just has some small hairline cracks from the heater plugs about 3mm in length on nos 2&3 cylinders

does this mean both heads are scrap? if so does anyone know where i can get one for a reasonable price?

    thanks

    will
