my old alternator packed up after the peterbourough land rover show, so bought bought a bigger 100amp one which after a bit on tinkering got to fit, this then shredded the first new belt, which was a standard one from a motor parts shop, and i could not quite get tight enough as was a bit to long, so went to my local bearing belt shop and bought a slightly shorter but 13mm wide one which fitted lovely and i could get tight, this has been fine for a while but last few weeks been smelling burning rubber so re tightened belt, this has now completly shedded off this morning. To add some extra information to the problem i have also just added electric fans and removed the vicous one but when i removed it,i noticed it was jammed solid and was running wonky which has left the bit it was mounted to with about 4mm play the actual water pump is not leaking but i am assuming the bearing in side is shot, it still spins freely so this is not breaking the belts, could it be that the play in this though is causing the belt to slip on the alternator, this is where its slipping as there is a lot of rubber dust on & arround it, the belt has worn in just 2 places roughly opposite each other. i'm assuming that this play is not right and so changing water pump is on the cards or can i just change the bearing, and is this the cause of the belt failure on the alternator or is it that the alternator is to big for a v belt (its a 200 tdi) any suggestion would be apreciated, i'm off to buy another belt so as i can drive home!!!
