if the crank position sensor is the green plug at the back of the eingine, then yes. it is connected.
firing order.. gonna take the coil pack off and recheck it.
im hoping its something simple.
-
yeah. im sure its something stupid...
-
its possible. might change them anyway, not been done for a while....
-
just done head gaskets. put it back together. turns over fine wont fire. damn sure the firing order is right but it sounds like it isnt. im sure im missing something stupid but im damned if i know what it is...

i really need to get help from someone that knows the p38 4.0 v8 inside out because i am well and truly stumped now. i would recompense with copious beer?
this is a great community and i appreciate your help.

ok firing order im using
is this right?
it Sounds like it isnt correct, its trying to start, the plugs are wet but it wont catch...
im stumped. i dont suppose there is anyone that wants to give me a hand???????

IM getting a bit peeved now. ive got it back together, i know the firing order is correct but it just wont start. aaaaaargh.
any ideas?
-
got the heads back today... 3 hours after i dropped them off. good of the guys at paul inch engine services to do a rush job like that. means i can put it together this weekend rather than next week after work.
well recommended.
pressure tested and skimmed. all ok.
will start putting it back together after work tomorrow.
i really need to stop working a 6 day week...
-
Possibly...... but it didnt

SUCCESS.
had a 90* chuck on my drill (went through 3 of them actually, dont buy the one in screwfix, the gearbox is plastic) and managed to drill up to 9.5mm. then i undid the head bolts that would undo and got brutal with it, levering the head off the block till the bolt snapped.... which it did quite easily.
now ive just got to have the heads pressure tested, skimmed and ported and polished (why not whilst theyre off) and stick it all back together
and the reason for the blown head gasket?
afore mentioned numpty previous mechanic decided to torque it down when one of the dowells wasnt aligned with the hole in the head. so that cyl head wasnt sitting square. idiot.
-
I might just have to yet ....
-
the bolts are quite soft thank god, its just access....
thanks smallfry, ive got new headbolts anyway
-
a previous owner has already had a go at this and i have one BIG headache. the sob has rounded off a head bolt on the rh cyl head.
so questions.
1, are the heads 'handed' or can i buy a head without knowing if its from the right side or the left?
2, any ideas of how to get this apart. trying to drill it atm but may give up and go at it with the gas axe. any better ideas?
3, what engines have compatible heads? (just in case)
thanks

at the price i got it for i could stick a performance turners engineering engine in and still be in the money (just)
so im not worried.
-
thanks
-
so do i.....
but i doubt it, its not bad enough.
-
just a quick question if i may.

i bought that one^^^^
only driven it a few hundred feet to get it up the drive to the trailer. the abs light does not go out when you start the engine but a few feet of movement and off it goes. is that a stored code (im gonna need a hawkeye i think) or something more serious?
ta.

im all sorted now. thanks.
-
couple of questions about the P38 i just bought
its pressurising the coolant after 5 miles or so

Head gasket im assuming?

granted i have a snorkel, but ive waded with the water coming 1/8 of the way up the windscreen.
i must admit to getting slightly nervous at that point.
