  1. OK, so i guess the question is - Did KKK2 manage to fit an oil cooler to his LT77??

Yes I did and I'm happy with the modification, however the gearbox fitted now was supplied with the cooler supplied by Ashcrofts, I understand the rear casting is different to allow the cooler part to be fitted to the gearbox, I think late LT77's fitted to Discoverys in Usa but 100% sure of that.

I have piped the cooler to a small radiator under the right hand wing and the gearbox runs fine and cool as I do a lot of towing, I am interested with the temp switch as I could use this to fix my oil temp gauge to.

  2. I had to mod the Lt77s with the cooler the same way, easily done, I did it after fitting the gearbox, as there was vibration where the cooler was rubbing off the seat box,

If this is all the mod needed then its not even worth worrying about, The cooler is good and works well today after a 120k run with a heavy trailer the gearbox was cool enough to touch. I would also consider a fully synthetic oil for the box which I will do when I do the first oil change at about 1000 Km after fitting

  3. I have recently fitted a new gearbox to my truck (1989 110), its a Lt77s which has the same ratio as the r380, while it was reconned I got a cooling modification fitted to it as well. I have a small radiator under the wing, For long haul stuff this keeps the gearbox cool. This facility is also available on the R380 gearbox too, however the shortshaft R380 is an expensive conversion. As for Xfer box, all transfer boxes have same lower ratios, so offroad there is no differance. On road we have both defenders with 1.2 and 1.4 Xfer boxes, the 1.2 runs quiter on road but like a naturally aspirated will find the hills before you see them when towing. I believe the 1.4 gives a better allround performance.

  4. I was pulled over a few months ago and the cops had a portable weighing scales type thing to check the weigh of the loaded trailer, (mine was ok) and I had the licence to pull the weight, however what the cop said that here (Ireland) if you do not hold or have held a licence for the catagory then there is no insurance cover as well, so points for no licence, and for no insurance...............

  5. I have seen events where smallest tyred trucks went off first and this solved the issue of the large tyred trucks churning up the ground.

On Hydro steering, we have systems fitted to lawnmowers which can still steer if there is fliud loss,or if the engine fails. As some one stated earlier we all love innovation, it really only needs someone to apply themselves to this issue and come up with a system that satisifies the "mechanical link" challenge. If this was resloved and could be demonstrated as suggested earlier, this I believe it would put a lot of the resistance and skeptics of hydro steer to rest.

  6. I asked to Ashcrofts today if they could modify the lt77 for cooling and unfoutunately it cannot be done by them, the internal pump in a Lt77 would not cope with the extra work either as it is of fiberous composition. The only way I see is to tap in a couple of pipes and a cooler, tank and an external pump (12V) to run the system, I also intend to put a thermal switch on so the system will only come on at a given temp.

  7. Having trouble keeping my LT77s cool at the moment, last oilchange saw fluid completely burned and black in colour. Current box gave up the ghost over the weekend. I was thinking of adding a cooling system to my new gearbox, using a circulating pump, and an oil cooler piped into the gearbox, Has any one done this? Pumps I am looking at are:

    My link pump 1

    My linkPump 2

Any ideas /suggestions welcome thanks K

  8. Looked and couldnt find the spacer as a seperate part, and to be honest the thought of modifing the existing calipers did not appeal, replaced the calipers complete with new AP ones from Bearmach, and delphi disks, the vented disks are nearly as cheap as the solid ones. The truck is 1989 so was due a new set of disks and calipers anyway. Pedal is a little softer but I have also upgraded rears from drums to disks as well.

  9. I've just upgraded my fronts on a 110 to vented, the disk diameter and the caliper are the same as the old solid ones but the calipers have a spacer in them for the extra width of the vented disk. The brakes operate the same as the solids but when stopping with a load on behind I find the vented brakes work better as the dissipate the heat quicker and so are more effficient at stopping. The down side is if you do offroading then the disks get clogged and are a pain in the butt to clean.
