Nick, this style of valve is easier to mount i've found :
They look nice but I supply a complete kit for £40 inc VAT.
If you know where to get valves like that at a realistic price i'd love to hear about it.

We can supply a lever valve as an option.
It's worth noting that any of the kits to control these drums will replace the standard ARB valve, you could operate your lockers without any wiring at all.

A quick search on ebay reveals this. We used to have one just like it, ours was morse taper, and had a good range of speeds owing to having two belts.

has the (dog clutch) system got any means of holding its self in tighter the harder you winch?
are the 2 parts of the (dog)easily replaceable should they ever get damaged due to misuse?

How are the components kept lubricated?
Should you need to replace components in the field is it easily possible?what tools would be needed? would you need to remove the winch to work on it?

Yes the drum is fail engaged, ie. if you loose air for whatever reason the spring will engage the drive dog.
Holding in is not a feature of this type of clutch.
The piston and therefore one half of the dog could be changed if damaged, however, both the part fixed to the drum and the piston are heat treated and tempered to avoid the possability of damage to drive surfaces.
The drum is assembled with waterproof grease so the air side is protected. The drive shaft is able to get oil from the winch gearbox, however, the bearings are grease lubricated.
If you were to need to replace parts then removing the drum from the winch would be the most work, once removed the mechanism can be removed with circlip pliers. (Internal and external circlips are used).
The drum does show at the end plate, I guess you could adapt to it but the bearing supplied is unlikely to fit.
You should have come to look at the weekend, I will be at Billing next month with one in bits so feel free to come and have a look.

Now that the EDR (European Design Registration) is applied for I can talk publically about the new air operated freespool that I have been using.
Developed in conjunction with X-Eng, the Delta-Tek freespool for Warn 8274 is a completely self contained freespool system, intended to be a direct replacement for the standard drum.
Key things that the drum offers are a reduced diameter to increase capacity or mechanical advantage, stainless ball bearing with hard anodised adaptor to replace the plastic end plate bearing and of course selectable from the cab freespool.
Will also be available in extended (+3") length for those who need a long one.
James and I have been using prototypes for the last year or so and have had some really good results, we won the Slindon round of the Howlin Wolf outright last year despite retiring an hour early.
Retail price will be from £399 inc. VAT.
Supplied as standard without pneumatic valve, although several options are available, both mechanical and solenoid. You could use your spare ARB channel if you have one.

I run Argoshield on a pukka bottle on my BoC account - my mate has a BoC bottle that he "aquired" - same size. If I let him fill up on my aco**** am I going to get stuffed for the rental - currently £70 per year for Size X bottle?
Happy to let my mate have the use of my aco**** - just don't wanna get stung for the rental - anyone else had an expereience of this?

It is my experience that, assuming the cylinders are the same type and size, you will have no trouble exchanging a non account cylinder. Although people are saying that cylinders are marked and scanned I have seen no evidence of this from BOC.

I have had satisfaction delivered by WOPCO, EP90, DII, DIII, engine oil, degreaser, TFR, you name it.

If you are in the area then a company called migtigarc in Portsmouth (here) do an equivalent to argoshield for much less than BOC.
The bottles are about the size of the smaller 'X' size BOC bottles from what I can see, although they may be slightly smaller than this. It does however still work out significantly cheaper..
From what I remember their contract is as follows:
Cylinder deposit = £35
3 year(!) rental contract = £53
Each refill = £21
This means that it will cost £109 initially but then take into account the longer rental length, return of deposit and cheaper refill and it looks pretty good. This is especially so if you are a 'light' user..
For example: If you didn't require any refills over the three year period you would only part with the equivalent of £25 a year!
There isn't much on their site about the gas rental but give them a call and they will give you the details.

Take note of whether the fill pressure is the same, the difference in gas content between 150bar and 230bar (BOC etc.) is huge.
