  1. Often the best place to hide the switch is in plain sight!.

If you have other extra switches add it to the row and label it work light or something similar, last thing a thief wants to do is turn all the lights on and so long as YOU know what it is thats all that matters, might have to explain it to the MOT tester though.

If it is hidden away somewhere it is the sort of thing that might be looked for.

Depending on what engine you have you can break the wire to the normal fuel cut of solinoid and add a switch in there, any one attempting to start the engine would just think it is a really bad starter and hopefully leave swearing, that never happens with a land rover product does it!.

I have a 200tdi engine where is the fuel cut off solenoid? Thanks

  2. Hi guys,

A lot of defenders have been going missing around my local area recently if the info I've been given is correct I think 9 have been stolen since Christmas! Including my mates 90 that we found burnt out on the beach!

My dad and I both have defenders and we have CCTV that alerts us when somebody walks onto the drive we also have hidden battery isolators steering locks and a dog that goes off its head when anybody walks onto the driveway but I still feel I could do with some more security.

I'm thinking either a manual fuel shut off or wiring one up to a hidden switch somewhere the wiring is no problem but I'm just wondering where the best location would be to break the line and fit the valve and also hide the switch if I was to go down this road?

Also any other security suggestions would be great!

    Thanks!

  4. I don't think there is a policy, after all, it's just like having pax in the back of a convertible. I used to have the 2 kids and 2 dogs in the back of our Lightweight with the rag top rolled up on all sides with no problem, though I did fit lap straps and tie the dogs down. I think the biggest problem you'll run into is other peoples' envy come the summer!

Yeah that's what I've been doing it just seems too good to be true law wise

  5. My brakes are making screeching noises every now and again but will go if I pull over and put excessive force onto my brake pedal what could this be it sounded like it was from the rear of the car I also braked hard before and the car wanted to turn right but went again after using excessive force on the brakes when pulled over

  6. I have 130 suspension on my Defender 110 station wagon. I have that because when travelling in southern Africa we carried a heavy load without the Defender looking heavily laden.

The 130 helper springs fitted into red/ red springs at the rear will lift the rear by 3 inches....I know because I took the top bar off my gate entrance after fitting them.

Why do you want/ need a lift ?

More for looks than anything but the extra load carrying potential would come in handy

  7. went into a shop today and asked for a 2" lift kit for my 110 hicap

the guy went over different prices and different kits etc and came to the conclusion that a 130 suspension set up would be cheapest and would provide me with the same lift

    is this true

are 130's higher or due to mine weighing less would mine be lifted because of it?

  8. Hi all

Basically my dad has a 110 hi cap

We bought this for next to nothing knowing it was rotten knowing we had a big project

Turns out the bulk head is beyond repair so we plan to buy a new one

Some parts of the chassis are rotten too and we are considering a galv chassis route! We have found a td5 rolling chassis on eBay but I'm unsure if the 200tdi will go in? What are the differences?

Just to clarify we have a 1986 hicap and we are looking to put a td5 chassis under it! Can this be done?

    Cheers

    Tom

  9. Why do you specifically want an LT85?Defender (tdi) R380 would need some fiddling with to fit the V8, namely the spigot bearing on the TDI box is larger, so you'd have to machine the spigot on the engine out to the same size as the TDI shaft. In your situation, your best bet is to buy something like the disco you linked, and drop the entire engine/box/transfer case into your defender.Either swap the selector shaft, or buy the little adaptor piece (which saves you stripping the box down!), and fit a defender selector turret and your sorted.Adaptor is here: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=375'>http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=375

Thanks for the help will keep my eyes out for a perfect donar and book mark that adaptor! Cheers!

  10. okay ive decided to go down the route of buying a donar car

im toying now between either the 4.0 older range rover

    or a 3.9 disco manual

    i want the manual box

if i was to get a manual 3.9 disco would the box be the lt85 that i need or will this box fit?

also one of the earlier commens stated that some engines are not easy to get running out of the donar but surely if i have the car there it would be a different story but then as the 4.0 rangey is auto and i want a manual im stuck again on making it be able to take the lt85 id also have to buy the lt85!

so basically my questuion is should i just get hold of a manul 3.9 disco and make my life a whole lot easier

  11. basically i have a defender with a canvas roof and i have a light bar i had fitted to my old roof i want the light bar on but unsure how to mount it

does anybody have any pics of this being done or have they done it themselves and how did you do it if so! pictures would be best if possible or any info on where i can buy a new one

i can weld and adapt the roof bar i currently have but have no ideas how to mount i have seen this done before though
