  1. Hi,

In the tech section under 'A127 Alternator regulator replacement, By Luke' which i guess is you, there's a pic of said alternator and I think mine does look like that.

In the first pic of the alternator there's a white cable going to it - does it normally come from that direction because i don't think I have that cable and I may need to have a search under the bonnet for it, I guess that one is for the ign light.

At the monent I only have two wires connected to it and the haynes manual says three, so I think that may be my problem.

  2. Yesterday afternoon and today I've been needing to jump start my defender because the alternator isn't charging I don't think. I did notice in the past few days that the speed of the starter turning the engine over has decreased ever so slightly until yesterday when it didn't have enough to start it.

    - The belt is tight.

    - The two wires on the back that are fixed with a nut are both secure - are there any other connections?

The ignition light doesn't come on when I start the engine and does not come on when the engine is running and I will investigate this later.

I took it to Halford for them to check the alternator with a bit of fancy Bosch kit and it said 'ripple too small', any ideas?

I've heard that you can replace the brushes and rectifier, is this a worth while option?

Any help much appreciated (i.e. the best price for a new one), and yes I did have a look at the many other alternator threads before posting another!!

  3. I gather I will need to take the tunnel out and even the access panel under the centre seat, but thats easy to do.

I've added another picture to clarify. No: 11 in the diagram is the gasket I plan to change. Can all of the parts that sit in the tray (No: 10) stay in there when you take it off. Are ther any fiddly linkages that need disconnecting between the gearbox and tray above (No: 10) or does the shaft sit in a groove.

Sorry to be a pain, it seems that it's all getting a bit confusing!

  4. Thanks for the reply.

No, its at the top of the gearbox above the 5th gear end.

I've arrowed the gasket I'm planning on changing in the image below. Hope this helps!

Oil seems to be leaking around this area, so I'll have a go at changing it. Can you take the whole unit off or would you need to to take it off in sections? I know that you would need to disconnect the transfer box linkages, but I am unsure after that.

  5. My gearbox is still leaking!

I am thinking of changing the remote houseing gasket (the bit that the g-box and t-box levers sit in). As it seems to be leaking around the top of the gearbox. I know I will have to disconnect the transfer box linkages to take it off, but what else would I need to take apart/remove. How is the gear lever linkage shaft connected to the main gearbox linkages.

Is it possible to take the whole assembly off in one go?

    Any advice greatly received.

P.S. I've checked the breathe hose and it is not blocked.

If this doesn't work I will have to think about taking it to a garage/specialist to change the gasket that joins the main gearbox halves together.

  6. As it was the first Land Rover show I've been to it was excellant.

So many Land Rover to look at.

    Huey

MadMatt's 130 (like your log splitter attachment)

    Devon 4x4 110 trayback

    All the Shire Land Rovers

    Range Rover convertable

Only naming a few and that was just at the show, there were loads more in the camp site and in the car park!

The museum was good as well, a few interesting concept cars.

An a series 2 prototype which look as if they had just recieved - it was in a terrible state - but looked good.

  7. Hi everyone,

Another excellant day at Bunny Lane.

Hope to see some of you again next weekend at the National Heritage Centre Land Rover 60th

  8. Hi,

I couldn't find any existing posts about this event (apologies if there are).

I plan on driving up in the 90 on Saturday morning (probably up the M40, its sadly all motorway for me :( ).

Just wondered if I'll see many other Land Rovers going up there on the saturday?

Should be a good event, I haven't been to it before. Is it a yearly thing?

  9. On CB only the current UK & Euro CEPT frequencies are permitted, IIRC SSB/USB/LSB & AM & Morse [CW] are not permitted. but these regulations IIRC still apply the Licence requirement was dropped in 2006, cb licence no longer required

I thought that all of the SSB/USB/LSB bands etc were not leagal to use, but does this mean that if you keep it on FM your OK, or is it completely illegal and so you can not use it?

P.S. I've seen the phrase 'IIRC' (I guess its a phrase) a few times and was wondering what it meant?

  10. Hi all,

I know CB Radio is useful for green laning and off roading.

I have an old Superstar 360 and was wondering if this is legal because it has other stuff apart from the FM that we use such as AM, CW and USB.

I spose if you keep in on FM you'll be fine.

    Any advice appreciated.

  11. Hi,

I was thinking of replacing the lower half of my passenger door frame as it is quite rusty with defender door repair sections.

What I wanted to know is how easy is to peel back the door skins to access the frame to start the repair.

Is this a bad idea because I can see the paint is not going to like it and flake off, I spose you could take the whole skin off.

Anybody have any ideas, experience with doing this.

    Thanks

    Steve
