  1. I'm not entirely sure it is legal (see SVA manual) but in any case modern cars have crumple zones, series dont, I think if I had to I'd probably rather total a volvo at 70 than a series at 40... while you're building in the mounts why not just make them at least level with your shoulder then theres no problem?

    Just my 2p,

    Mike

sorry but i am with mike on this i smashed my series last year and at 25 mph it hurt best to not compomise on your life

  2. The chassis looked to be in good condition. Rear cross-member was replaced recently. It looked to be under-sealed properly (have a look at the photos, I took a few pictures underneath). I meant to write that down before... I just forgot. Thanks.

its worth having a good poke about at the chasis after all underseal is a bad welders best friend

  3. before you jump to a desision think very hard about what you want and how you drive your car

if u do a lot of motorway miles or like to drive fast then i would go for a 2 inch with heavy duty springs

as you can still run anti roll bars

however if u want to go the whole hog and have an off road best then go 3 inch but you will notice your stering will alter slightly

i no 5 discos running 3 inch lifts without cranked castor arms and trailing arms perfectly well

i alsi no one with a 4 inch lift the main prob seems to be the steering will not self center

also you will have to check your bushes more often

to give you some idea of what you can do with a 2 inch lift mine just crused round the extrem course at eastnor with no probs

and as to just wanting it to look a beast lol attak the wheel arches with an angle grinder this will also stop tyres hitting them

    regards old leafer

    ps

if you tow think about the new ride angle of your trailor or caravan

    pps

and as you have seen suspention is very much a matter of personal choice

you will strugle to get any two of us to agree whole hartedly on the subject lol

  4. Attended Eastnor today and did the intermediate off road course (Land Rover Experience), which was easy enough for the beast! However at some point during the course I must have broken something, there's now a strange loud grinding noise coming from underneath when turning slowly mostly apparent when turning to the right, its also reluctant to drive forward or reverse at lock as if something is holding it back!?

When sat still with the engine running I can steer lock to lock without any noises - so I think I can rule out the steering box?

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

get wash it drop the wheels of and have a look it might be somthing simple like a tyre rubbing on mud or somthing you have picked up

have a good look at the stearing arms if not as a very slight bend will make it rub aswell

  5. So who did the advanced course, and how many cleared it, without a tow? Saw at least 7 having a tug out of the "American Dips", and one broke a rear diff. Apparently, that was the fourth that day (Saturday). Quite a few had problems with the Camel Humps too, mainly V8s with their water affinity.

did it sunday it was not that bad all six cleard in discos did have to pull a 90 out tho hehehehehehehe

mind you it is our local mud even tho we not alowed on the tracks

to be honist there are harder green lanes if you look hard enuff

    p.s

you cant beat the sound of a misfire on a wet v8 :P

  6. i will be in eastnor this week with work i will post how mudy it is

as to getting lost its easy to find j7 of the m5 follow signs to malvern over the hills as you drop down turn left at the sing

ooooohhhhhhh and the malverns look very tempting to play on but its not woth the fine if you get caught

and they may try to empound your truck (not that i would ever do somthing to find that out you understand)

  7. Should be a good film :P

No clutch, no brakes, front chassis rotten away that hold's the springs (wooden blocks between the axle and bump stops to keep the front end in the air)

If only I could find a realy steep hill :o

looks in back garden few its still there i thort you had mine for a min then

  8. I could but I won't.

Why not you will doubtless ask.

Well if we permit every question to pull in all the wider issues then we would end up with a debating chamber discussing every subject under the sun. As it is we like to keep this place focused on technical issues concerning Land Rovers, you know - how do I fix this, replace that, improve the other. Nuts and bolts stuff, not politics, world economics, philosophy, who likes milk and who likes plain chocolate.

    Ok? Any problems PM me.

i like milk chocolate but point taken

  9. how could or would you go about a certain protest tho if everyone in this country decided not to go to work and buy fuel for 1 week i could see something like that working out but how could you get it to a nation wide scale

dont no if its true was there not a law brought out about using lorries as blockades? after the last fuel protests

and rant over an back on track

i could get sunflower oil from the market at £19 for 25l if i sweet talked my boss

am sure you prob no someone in the food industry that has access to cooking oil

on another note can you not use used cooking oil, granted it has to be filtered lots but the price you could get it at maybe worth it in the long run.

    dave

lol i avarage 350 liters a day on one truck can u get a tanker load

there is a comon missunderstanding about veg oil

if you could get every farmer in the uk to grow fields full of the stuff it would not cover what we use let alone have room for the food we need to eat

as for fillterd oil there are many quality isuses with it and if your car was your living would you take a risk of breaking down

  10. I couldn't agree more with what you have said. We are a country of complainers, unwilling to do anything but whine.

Today's, protests are a case in point. It's no good a few trucks here and there slowing the traffic down, it needs to be nationwide.

As for the world running out of oil. Ha! There's more Oil stuck in worked Oil fields then we have ever taken out. The problem is once the pressure is lost it costs too much to get it out, however once the price of Oil reached 100USD per barrel, it becomes economic to use other means to extract this unpressurised oil.

OPEC are the ones setting the amounts they allow on to the world markets, which in turn dictates the market price. The price of a litre of Petrol in Saudi is around 0.07USD yes that's 7cents.

Meanwhile I beleive none of the oil the we produce goes into Petrol/Diesel production as it's too higher grade, however we produce more than we currently would consume. It's about time we told them to pi55 off and relied on our own reserves, until we can figure out cost effective ways of retrieving the rest of this "lost" oil.

its the same story world over there is not another country in the world pays what we do

and if u work it in to pounds not dollers it would make you sick

mind you mr brown is rubbing his hands together and looking at the balance sheet

a minister said today if we cut fuel duty what services would you want cut

i think i could find a few lol

if i had my way and it seems harsh i would get every car van truck motor bike bus and train to park up just for 24 hours

then mr brown would see just how fast the house of cards would fall

  11. There's a lot WE can do. A fully supported fuel boycott, and a fully supported can't afford to go to work days. The Gov would soon do something.

our trucks was on the last fuel protest in 2000 you will find it hard to get any one to goin forces on this and there are a few reasons

A/ last time we was thretend that if we didnt move the army would move us (and they say its a free country not a police state

B/ while we were parked up blockading the continental trucks were sniffing round our customers and running on cheep derv of the continent

C/ and this is worst of all as a country we never seem to agree on anything

while we have politicions who seem more intrested in fighting wars that the rest of the world have no intrest in and tree hugers spend there lifes huging trees and saying what evil people we are for killing the planet we are doomed

  12. Hello all, been lurking around on this forum for a few months now lapping up the information contained within prior to purchasing a Series 3. And what a great site it is....

Anyway earlier this week I took the plunge and brought a 1983 Series 3 of the Bay of Es for £400, 5 miles down the road from where I live... Got the chance to view and drive before I purchased, with MOT and Tax until next month. Anyway as you can imagine its not perfect for £400 and the following problems were clearly mentioned in the description - Lower part of footwells needs replacing (Passenger side is MOTable but while doing the drivers side I may as well do this as well) Front fuel tank outrigger corroded and pulls to the right when braking.. So a bit of work to do which while not daunting for me calls on reviving my skills for welding, which were last used some 15 years ago when I had a sideline restoring classic cars.

The rest of the car is good, engine is a peach and bodywork solid and reasonably straight with a Safari roof and new tyres. Much loved by its previous owner but neither the skills or the time to get it straightened up. For me the car will be a bit of fun as a project and a prime mover for me and my dog when the shooting season starts and will probably do no more than 3000 miles a year around the Kent countryside. So this gives me until October to get it back on the road with a fresh MOT...

So my reason for this post is two fold:- An introduction as i will probably be posting looking for advice and inspiration.

Secondly some initial advice on parts recommendations... Scouring the web and LRO there are so many suppliers of pattern and OEM parts. My intial start to this project (In parallel to the welding) is getting the suspension and brakes up to scratch. So do you guys have any advice on suppliers to use and the best manufacturer for brake and suspension components.

I look forward to your reponses and thanks in advance. I hope at some point I will be able to contribute...

    Mark..

hi mark it all depends on what you want your series to do for normal shoot driving standerd springs will be fine

parabolics are smother tho and make travling across fields more comfy

as for breaks most bits you will find in your local car spares place all tho they may have to order

paddocks m&ms and places like that i find prity good all tho unless your local there is the wait for the parts

well the waiting in for the post man is the main pain

ooooohhhhhhh and when you have done your breaks you will realise they are usless lol you get used to them tho

    regards mark

  13. 3 out of 3 recommendations for Ashcrofts. Looks like i will go there - perhaps i will bite the bullet and try this myself.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, how heavy is an R380 gearbox - i ask in the interests of not being crushed when i try to lift the old one out? ;)

Thanks for your input above - much appreciated

    Andy

you wouldnt want to drop it on your toe thats for sure but non better than ashcrofts

but if u ask nice there may be somone local willing to give you a hand

i would offer but its a bit of a drive from here good luck anyway

  14. I think the cover can be removed. Best wat to do it is to slacken all the bolts a few turns and see if the cover is then loose. There's a powerful spring in there somewhere that sets the pre-load, but I think it runs across, rather than up and down.

If the cover is loose, then I would remove it.

    Les.

thanx les i will give it a go nothing to lose

and as to the debate about new or recon i do high miles and with such an important part as steering i would never take

    chance

an out of control disco would make a real mess at 90 eeerrrrr i mean 70 on the motorway

after all recon is a broken part been made good (hopefuly)

i no mine is good just weeping fron the top gasket

  15. Hi,

The bottom rear corner of the back door of my disco are really quite dangerous! Well dangerous to my two year olds head any way. She is just tall enough that the sharp corner is just at the right hight to do her a real injoury.

Has anyone any ideas for rubber stops to just make the corner safe. All I can find on the net are the door strips for protecting the edges in car parks. I cant find any that would do for a corner.

    Ta

    Stephen

gaffer tape is what i used after the said impact

your choice if you do the door or child tho

it may seem a bodge way but the little darlings grow so fast soon they will be banging there heads on somthing els

  16. ok this is a tech question is it posable to remove the top of a stearing box and change the gasket

if so any one got any idea what i will find when i take the top off

    fingers crossed

as i dont want to pay the 270 pounds for a new one

  17. Hi

Quick question, Is it worth me megajolting the 2.25 in the 109, or should I use it for a bit while I rebuild a 3.9 for it and megasquirt the V8? I'm not after performance from the 2.25  but reliability, the MJ kit seems cheapish and I can get the bits from a scrappy, and I can whinge at Pete until he installs it for me  but is it a waste of money when ultimately I'll need a V8, I can't help it and I know its childish but I just love the sound B) B)

    Mike

ahhhhhhhhhh yes there is nothing like the sound of the missfire of a wet v8

    smiles joking

  18. i have just been given some 110 springs and told they will fit my disco

on the 110 springs the drivers side are longer than the passanger side is this the same on ,my disco befor i rip it to bits to find its wronge

  19. Hi, sorry to butt in on someone elses thread but I figured it would save making another thread for a similar question. I have a pair of Disco axles that I intend to fit to my SWB Series 3. I will be fitting Parabolics and extended shockers but I was also planning on mounting the leaf plates to the top of the axles (similar to the mod on a series axle/flipping the axle casing) and basically mounting the srpings on top of the axles, giving it more lift but mainly because the tyres I want to fit are a little too agressive and big and I reckon they might catch the wings or chassis on an off road course.

Would I experiance any problems if I fitted these in such a manner.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

you will also find it is a little bit unstable and wanders a lot on road

  20. please can you help by sending your pictures of 109 2a/3 im trying to return my 109 back to military as the owner before has done his upmost to remove it orginal roots

    thanks
