  1. Hi will I have the winches I need for now, its the mounting plates, brackets, bumpers that I need now. Thanks for the reply Bigant
  2. I thought I would add an update following all of the suggestions, help and advice. So, I bought a EP9 Goodwinch with a plasma rope which I thought would be a good starting point, then I went down to spectate at the Mud Monsters/GigglePin Challenge event at Slindon and realised I would need a more powerful winch for the front. (The plan now is to use the EP9 as a rear winch) So I am now the proud owner of a Warn 8274 so whats the best way to attach the 8274, will I need a specific winch bumper? Is there a "plate" that you can buy that sits between the chassis legs? The new suspension is fitted, all bar the front shocks as I need some front turrets, see my wanted ad, and although it will be a while before I eneter my first winch challenge, my vehicle will get its first outing on its new suspension next Sunday in a CCV trial. Cheers Bigant
  3. Hi I am keen to come along and spectate can you let me have details of how to find the event? I am in the process of adapting my trialler for winch challenge events and it would be good to see how the event works and also take a look at some of the vehicles competing. Many thanks Bigant
  4. Hi Does anyone know what the height is of a pair of standard height heavy duty front turrets? I am about to fit new suspension to my trialler, many thanks to all that offered advice on what set up to buy, and the home made turrets that are fitted at the moment are over 16" tall!? I don't think that these home made turrets will work with my +2" shock absorbers, but I could be wrong. Many thanks Bigant
  5. Thanks I will give them a try Bigant
  6. Hi I have a raised air intake but I need the felexible hose to connect it up, does anyone know where I can buy it by the metre? many thanks Bigant
  7. HI There I am keen to enter the Challenger series this year and I am in the process of adapting my trialler with the odd winch etc. Could you confirm that competing vehicles need to have an MOT? My vehicle is a pretty tidy V8 RRC based trialler but it has no lights or indicators and it does not have an MOT. Many thanks Bigant
  8. Interesting, thanks for the heads up on this, once I have got my suspension etc sorted I will be down to see you! Is the kit to do the conversion expensive? Bigant
  9. Can I do that on an early V8 engine running on carbs?
  10. I am thinking of the waterprof nature of the diesel engines Bigant
  11. Hi Nige Its based on an early 1970's range rover chassis shortened to 88" wheel base. Series rear tub with a defender style flat front. Truck cab with full roll cage. 3.5 V8 engine on carbs mated to 4 speed manual RR gearbox. Rear suspension layout is early RR in terms of rear shocks. Currently sitting on standard height standard coil springs. Hope this helps Bigant
  12. Dear All Following on from my recent post "best suspension set up for trialling" thanks to all for the advice and suggestions, my wife, whilst reading my latest copy of LRO, dropped the most amazing bombshell when she said, "why don't you do these winching events" I have now recovered, and as I was able to record the comment I am now looking for advice on the following; Whats the best suspension set up for a vehicle that will compete in both trialling and challenge events? For a beginner, what sort of front winch should I look for? Is there a series of events for beginners? Will I need a winch on the back as well as on the front? Am I right in thinking I will need an MSA licence? Are helmets compulsory in winching events? My trialler has a V8 engine should I be considering a change to 200 or 300 tdi diesel? Thanks in advance Bigant
  13. No Problem Muddy I have another question for all you suspension buffs out there regarding the shocks that are already fitted which I am I hoping I may be able to continue to use. They are Pro Comp, I think, they have Explorer stamped in the casing together with the following numbers 93200 21097 C031Y1? These shocks, well the rear ones anyway, are 83cm long when fully extended, measuring from the middle of the eye to the middle of the "pin" fixing at the other end. Now due to the set up that is currently on my trialler, all four shocks are fitted with the "eye" at the bottom with the "pin" at the top running through the home made extended turrets. However as I am now refitting the original RR rear shock absorber mounts I am hopng to flip the shocks around and reuse them. Question is from the description and serial numbers provided can anyone tell me if these are standard length shocks or something longer? Are they RRC spec or are they for another model of Land Rover? Thanks again for the help and advice Bigant
  14. Hi Many thanks for your comments and suggestions, would you be able to recommend a supplier of the springs you have mentioned? Would it also help if I fitted shorter turrets to the front? Thanks again Bigant
  15. Hi I have a RRC based trialler that has been shortened to 88" and it has a series rear tub and a defender style front end. The fuel tank is in the back between the wheel arches and there is a roll cage fitted. I need to make changes to the suspension as it is currently non standard and the rear wheel arches come into contact with the tyres when the going gets tough. Currently the rear is set up with the shocks running through the coils to home made extended turrets, which I believe would be ok for speed events but its not the best for trialling. The vehicle is fitted with 235/85/16 Insa Turbo tyres so the are not the biggest of tyres, and I am thinking of fitting a 2" lift kit to help keep the bodywork and the tyres apart so I am looking for suggestions as to what to buy. Am I right in thinking that "red and white" coils are still a favoured choice for trialling? Would they work with a vehicle of this weight? As always I am on a budget and if I do fit the +2" kit will I need to fit camber altered hardware such as trailing arms etc? Any suggestions gratefully received and heres hoping we all have a Happy, and muddy, New Year. Bigant
  16. Hi Thanks for the input, the tyres I am looking at are actually 265/85/16, do you think they will be too wide for trialling?
  17. I have the opportunity to pick up some BFG Mud terrains at a good price and I was wondering if anyone has used them for trialling? Most vehicles use diamond pattern tyres or the really aggressive "special track" design. Any thought sor input gratefully received. Regards Bigant
  18. Hi All Thanks for the advice, finally got her going this morning here's how in case anyone runs into the same problem; Remove battery from fob Press either button for minimum of 5 seconds to clear fob (Hold onto the internals when pushing the buttons) Replace battery Unlock door with the key Lock and unlock the vehicle using key fob a minimum of 4 times. This resets the system and saves you pulling anymore hair out!! Thanks again. Cheers Bigant
  19. Its a 97/98 r reg Disco 1
  20. Hi Further to the problems we have had with the remote central locking on our Discovery 1, we finally got into it and to avoid further issues we left it open. We did not know that in doing this the immobiliser would automatically kick in to prevent it being nicked. Now we have a Discovery that we can get into but it will not start. Any idea's sugestions etc greatly appreciated. (We have already changed the battery in the key fob, twice in fact!) Cheers Bigant
  21. Hi Thanks for the warning, I will use the filler plugs on the sides as you have suggested, what happens if you undo the copper coloured nuts? Regards Bigant
  22. Dear All I have just fitted a recon gearbox and I now need to fill it with oil, can I fill it by removing the copper coloured nut covers on the top of the main and transfer boxes or do I have to use the fill/level holes on the sides? Secondly, how much oil should does the box take? Cheers Bigant
  23. Hi All I am yet another Disco 1 owner that is struggling to get in to our vehicle. Key fob stopped working last weekend, batteries changed but with no effect or result. Battery was removed from fob and lock button depressed for 20 seconds to "clear" the fob, stil nothing, I picked this idea up from this forum, hoped it would solve the problem but it didn't. Can anyone suggest what my next move should be?? Many thanks Bigant
  24. Dear All Further to my post yesterday, regarding the removal of the front prop shaft flange, we decided to undo the oil seal housing to see if we could remove all of the components together. Everything was still stuck fast so we used some brute force in the form of a large drift and a heavy hammer. To my amazement, instead of the flange coming off we managed to dislodge the whole output shaft including the bearing, which means we are now faced with repairing rebuilding that part of the gearbox!! So if you are ever faced with an front output shaft that just won't come off, do not undo the bolts retaining the seal housing before you start beating the living daylights out of it or introducing a gear puller etc. Does anyone have a really good series 2a gearbox that they want to sell?? Regards Bigant
