  1. Dear All Next job up on the series 2a job sheet is to change the oil seals on the front and rear output shafts, the rear went ahead without any drama's however the front is proving to be a pain! After establishing that there was not a split pin securing the castleated nut, we eventually got it undone but boy was it on tight, this seems to have had the knock on effect of jamming the prop shaft bit onto the shaft. I have tried using a two legged gear puller and the "universal spanner" method to no effect, does anyone have any idea's on how to shift it? Regards Bigant
  2. Dear All Unbelievably, after leaving the fuel pipe to the carb disconnected overnight, a few pulls on the lever saw the fuel pump fill with fuel and she started first time ! I can only guess that I had some kind of air lock which bled itself away overnight. I just wanted to thank everyone that offered their help and advice, I guesss thats the beauty of the forum, there's a huge pool of knowledge and experience that you can call upon whenever you get stuck. Thanks again Bigant
  3. I haven't tried that yet as the battery went flat during the days other exhaustive attempts to get her going. I suspect that I wont see any fuel coming out of the feed pipe as I can't even get the fuel bowl on the fuel pump to fill up! Regards Bigant
  4. OK Final instalment before I pull all of my hair out! yes you've guessed it, despite fitting a new fuel pump I still cant get her to run! So far I have; Fitted a new fuel pump Removed and cleaned the filter on the main "hard pipe" in the tank. Removed the pipe from the tank to the glass bowl and checked it is clear. Done the same with the pipe from the pump to the carb. Removed the pipe from the carb whilst pumping primer lever to ensure I get enough "draw". Turned the engine over to move the "cam" to allow for less resistance against the primer lever. Checked the new pump for "suction" and there seems to be plenty as you would expect with a new pump. Added fuel directly to the carb to run the engine to try and draw fuel from the tank. Sucked fuel through the pipe from the tank without any problems, apart from a gob full of petrol! As far as I can make out, and with the help of several members here on the forum, I have tried pretty much everything, unless someone out there knows any different? Thanks to those that have already shared their ideas Bigant
  5. Hi All Many thanks for all the suggestions so far but after a frustrating afternoon yesterday I still can't get her to run. Filling the carb with a bit of fuel got her to fire but not enough to draw fuel up from the tank. I have cleared all of the lines using compressed air so I am confident theh there are no blockages, but I cant even draw fuel into the glass bowl on the side of the pump so I am guessing both the pumps are knackered. I have ordered a new pump ad gasket so hopefully that should sort it, unless anyone has any other idea's? Many thanks Bigant
  6. Hi all Thanks for the tips, rest assurred I will be trying them all to see if i can get her started, I will let you know how I get on. Cheers Bigant
  7. Dear All I have finally got the series 2a out of winter storage and for some reason there is no fuel getting to the carb so obviously she won't start. I have removed and cleaned the mechanical fuel pump with no luck, so I have now changed it for one I had knocking around and I still can't get fuel out of the tank. I have drained the fuel tank and filled up with fresh fuel just to be safe. If anyone has any idea's on what I should try next or indeed what I need to do to the fuel pump to start getting the fuel through to the carb I will be most grateful. Thanks for your time Bigant
  8. OK the time has come to replace the existing suspension on my range rover based trialler. At the moment it is running on a standard spring set up with some long travel pro comp shocks, it is quite soft, which seems to be ok for trialing but the plan is to enter a few comp safari events over the summer. So, should I look at installing a twin shock absorber set up all round or would I be better of going for a full set of remote resevoir shocks? Any advice on set up would be gratefully received along with recommendations on any brands/makes to consider or avoid! Cheers Bigant
  9. Hi I was there as a spectator on Sunday and both driver and passenger walked away unscathed, although I bet they both had aches and pains the next morning. If I can work out how to add some photos, I will post some picks of their vehicle before the incident, when they looked very quick and competitive and a couple from after the impact when they were trying to work out how to get the vehicle home! Bigant
  10. Thanks for the reply, if the price of their parts is anything to go by Dunsfold will be a little out of my price range. Thanks again Bigant
  11. Due to il health I am looking for a series specialist in the Surrey area that can help finish the work on my series 2a swb landrover. The main job is fitting a recon gearbox, I also need the alternator wiring sorting out as I dont think I am getting any charge back to the battery and there are a couple of smaller jobs like sorting out a temp guage, and it will need a MOT. Any suggestions/recomendations will be gratefully received. Bigant PS Anyone used Rivett Auto's in Cranleigh?
  12. Sorry its been a while since I used the forum "David Beaumont 4x4 Gearbox Specialists" Bigant
  13. Try these guys as they quote £250 exchange for a series gearbox, I have not had one of their units yet as my project has been delayed by a house move but when I spoke to them they seem to have a good and effective system for exchanging the units Let me know if you give these guys a go as it would be good to hear what their gearboxes/service are like. Regards Bigant
  14. Hi While I am on here can anyone offer advice on the best tyres to opt for when competing in L/rover trials events? I currently run diamond pattern 205/80/16's which I thought would work ok but I noticed that most other competitors run on much bigger SATs or Diamonds up to 7.50x16. My tyres were part worn when I bought them. I have looked at the Insa turbo special track, would these be allowed in a club run trial or do they break the rules and regs? Thanks for your time Bigant
  15. Hi I am looking a buying a trailer to get my trialler to events and the tow vehicle has a max towing weight of 2500kg. I am looking at a modern lightweight trailer that has a total GW of 2,500kgs, the question is how heavy is my trialler? The vehicle runs on a shortend RR chassis witha series body with a truck cab and a full roll cage. I don't want to have to tow it to a weigh bridge un;less I really have to, has anyone got a similar vehicle that they might know the weight of that I can use as a guide? Thanks for your time Bigant
  16. Hi all Just wanted to add that I found the answer to my conundrum so in case you were wondering the thread size on the sender is 5/8" unf. Credit must go to Paul at Demon Tweeks for identifying the size of the thread and for selling me a new temperature gauge and converter I now have a fully operational gauge so I can now keep an eye on the temperature of my V8 engine Regards Bigant
  17. Hi Guys Thanks for all the advice, I have seen a low cost resevoir damper from Terra Firma has anyone used these and would they give a significant improvement over the pro comp shocks currently fitted? Thanks again to all that replied Bigant
  18. hi I have a very solid trials motor which is based on a shorthened RRC chassis and currently it is fitted with standard springs and pro comp shocks all of which work very well in a CCVT. I am keen to have a go at a comp safari but I am aware tha the current suspension set up is too soft, can anyone suggest the most cost effective way of stiffening or changing the suspension for a speed event? Many thanks Bigant
  19. Hi all I need to change the centre box on the exhaust fitted to my 3.5 litre engined trialler, will the later centre box from a 3.9 litre engine fit? I have been under a coupleof vehicles and they look pretty much the same. Thanks in advance Bigant
  20. Thanks guys for the Barcote recommendation, unfortunately I don't have my own spray gun/compressor and the manufacturer recommends it is applied by spray only. Has anyone tried applying Barcote primer by roller or brush? Cheers Bigant
  21. Hi Recentlty picked up some replacement series wings and I am about to start the process of repainting them to match the rest of my vehicle. Question is do I have to take the paint off down to the metal or will I be able to get away with flatting off the existing paint, then making good before repainting. Can anyone recommend a primer that will work with the existing paint, factory applied, so I can avoid any orange peel effects? I have heard of people using a foam type radiator roller to apply the paint can anyone confirm that this is a sucessful method? Many thanks Bigant
  22. Hi I am still trying to solve my temperature gauge issue. Before I go down the route of installing a new secondary system that means a new sensor on the top hose, does anyone know what the thread size of the standard sender unit is on a 3.5 litre V8? If I can identify this then I can pick up a new gauge and sender unit which looks like it may be the cheaper option. many thanks Bigant
  23. Apologies for not thanking you earlier, thanks for the tip on the web site to visit I should have something sorted this week. Thanks again Bigant
  24. Afternoon all I need to fit an auxillary temperature gauge to my trialler, it is fitted with a 3.5 V8 engine, can anyone suggest the best way forward. The original gauge is fitted to the vehicle, as the original instrument pod was retained, only it has some kind of fault as after a short time the needle moves into the red and stays there even though the engine is not over heating. Many thanks Bigant
  25. Hi Thanks for the advice, the series wheel I borrowed from the ninety fitted no problem, my earlier set from a series landrover needed a litte taking off with a flap wheel before they would go on. All sorted for now, thanks again Bigant
