  1. Hi Smokey I hadn't thought of removing the flanges, in the end I did a dash round the village and found a spare of a ninety that fitted and then an old eight spoke with a very old BFG tyre on it. I have since had the tape out and found that the actual difference in the diameter of the centre wheel hole is only a couple of mills, five minutes with a flap wheel in the end of a drill and the series wheels that I have, go straight on. I may end up following your advice and take the angle grinder to the edge of the flanges which will make it easier to fit wheels in the future. Thanks for the advice and welcome to the best LR forum out there! Bigant
  2. Hi all I have just collected a new toy, shortened RR chassis with RR running gear and a landrover series body. Previous owner kept the wheels that were fitted, and vehicle is now on a trailer with no front wheels. I have tried fitting Discovery steel rims and classic "three spoke" alloys and neither will fit due to the size of the hub. The axles are of an early 70's two door RR. What are my wheel options? Will sedries wheels fit, I am in a hurry as I have to drop the trailetr back in the morning!! Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers Bigant
  3. Hi Guys Can anyone recommend a supplier for a winch mount for a series 2a landrover? Haven't seen any advertised, I understand that Goodwinch used to supply something but there is nothing listed on their website. Regards Bigant
  4. Dear All A while back, some time last summer, I stumbled across a nice tidy series 3 landrover with the soft top removed. Across the top of the bulkhead was a sturdy looking bar on to which were fitted the seat belts inertia reels, does anyone know where yo can buy such a thing as I need to fit one to my series 2a so my young son can sit in the front with me. Thanks in advance Bigant
  5. HI John Thanks for the nod, I have seen this Company on the web before, they have got to be worth a look next week. Thanks again Bigant
  6. Hi Dunc I have been more than happy with remoulds in the past and I was looking at the new Insa turbo track remoulds but the wife has this thing about "recycled tyres" not being safe! I will push the cost advantage and see if I can pursuade her. Regards Bigant
  7. Hi Guys It's time to chnage the tyres on our Disco 1, currently we have a mixture of Goodyear and Nexan all in size 235/70/16. The vehicle spends 70% of its time on the road ferrying the little monsters around, we do tow a caravan three or four times a year and we do like a little gentle off roading, when it is available. I need to replace all 5 so the cost of BFG AT's is prohibitive although these would be my first choice. Can anyone recommend a brand/model of tyre and can I upsize slightly whilst keeping the original alloys? Obviously, I need to have the tyres fitted, I live on the Surrey Sussex border so if anyone can recommend a good supplier/fitting service that would be greatly appreciated. Cheers for now Bigant
  8. HI Les Sorry its taken a while to respond, I wil be changing the thrust bearing next week, and following the advice from Bill I will also be changing the clutch bits and pieces as well as I don't want to have to pull the gearbox out again. Thanks again Bigant
  9. HI Bill Thanks for the advice, sorry its taken a long time to reply but I have been abroad for a little while. Funnily enough both the gearbox and the engine have been in and out a few times due#ring the rebuild, I think I will change both the thrust bearing and the clutch bits as this is the last time they will be coming out for a while, or so I hope. Thanks again Bigant
  10. Dear All I have to renew the thrust bearing on an early series 2a gearbox. The nuts and bolts that retain the housing seem to be of a certain age and none of my metric or imperial sockets/spanners seem to fit. Can anyone confirm what size the nuts are before are start cursing and swearing rounding them off? All of the nuts seem to have a circular top to the head of the bolt which I am presuming is some kind of early version of a nyloc nut. Many thanks Bigant
  11. Dear All I have a strange squeeling noise eminating from the gearbox when I depress the clutch pedal, which goes as soon as I lift off the pedal, I am guessing I have a thrust bearing problem? Has anyone else had this problem was the cure as simple as chnaging the thrust bearing or is there another cause for this strange noise? Cheers Bigant
  12. Hi Guys Sorry been away, many thanks to everyone for the info, the photos and for taking the time to provide all of the details. Its time to get down to the steel stock holders and to blow the dust of the mig welder. Cheers Bigant
  13. Dear All Lets keep this thread going as there would seem to be a lot of interest in the specification of decent rock sliders. If you have a pair and you can measure and photograph them then clearly it would be a popular addition to the forum Cheers Bigant
  14. Dear All We were having major dramas with the key fob for our Discovery and for a few days we were locked out. Found a company called Remote Key on the web, they are based in Birmingham, we sent our fob to them for refurbishment and they did a great job returning the key within 48 hours. It looks and feels like a new one and after synchronising it with the vehicle it works a treat and it cost £39 all in and for us it was money well spent. Regards Bigant
  15. HI Todd I am sure that there are quite a few members that would be keen on this, if anyone is prepared to run a tape over their rock sliders and post the dimensions I am sure it would be popular. If a few pictures could be added that would be even better! Thanks for the suggestion/idea Bigant
  16. Hi Ivan Feel free to drop me a line at antcara@tiscali.co.uk with an idea of price etc and I will get back to you. Thanks for the reply Regards Bigant
  17. I am looking for a pair of rock sliders to fit my series l/rover, I understand that Mill Services have ceased trading, does anyone know of another supplier? Cheers Bigant
  18. Hi Guys A big thanks to everyone that has responded, there are some good idea's and suggestions as to how to get the bolts out. Guess what I will be doing this weekend! Regards Bigant
  19. Hi Guys I am probably missing something obvious but whilst trying to change a damaged bumper on a friends series 3 I discovered that all four nuts have been rounded off. Can anyone advise of the best way to get the old bumper off as I can't get a spanner to hold the nuts and they are pretty solid. Cheers Bigant
  20. Hi Guys Just got the series 2 a back together, failed MOT on brake pipes inadequately, too much movement in the swivels and a front tyre that rubs on the leaf spring. None of which are major, however on the way to the MOT station I noticed that the gearbox, which was previously a little loud sounded like it was going to explode. The whinning was so loud that I actually stopped and checked underneath to see what was causing the problem. Could'nt see anything major, one thing that is different to how the box was before the rebuild is that I have now replaced the speedo cable, could this be the cause of the loud whinning? Regards Bigant
  21. Dear All I am nearly there now with the rebuild of my landrover but I am really up against the clock. I have entered the RTV at the National this weekend and I still have to get an MOT. This weekend, as well as my other tribulations, see earlier posts, I discovered that one of the wiper motors has packed in. Is there anyone in the Bristol area that has one that works going cheap?? Let me know ASAP I will be back in the area tomorrow. Regards Bigant
  22. HI Mate Thanks for the info, there must be a wire that I have missed or lost during the engine transplant. Regards Bigant
  23. Hi Guys First of all a big thank to everyone that replied to my last thread, the gearbox is now firmly and correctly attached to the new engine and having taken note all of the advice I was offered the winner or the person that diagnosed the problem correctly was Les Henson. It was all about the alignment of the clutch plate centre. So the problem now is that I can't get the engine to start. I have no spark at any of the plugs, I have checked the points fitted a new dizzy cap changed the rotor arm and even swapped the HT leads for another set that I had. The coil is the one that was previously fitted and was working fine. I have one HT lead running from the centre of the coil and the wire from the distributer is connected to the front connection on the right hand side of the coil as you look at it standing in front of the vehicle. Should there be another wire connected to the coil? I can't find a spare and in theory if there was one it would be hanging around the engine bay. Any advice or suggestions would be welcome as always. Cheers Bigant
  24. HI Les Sound advice as always thanks for the suggestion. Regards Anthony
