  1. Planning on a trip around wales in the Summer and really fancy driving Strata Florida. I heard about this a few years ago when I was stopping at a Bothy half way along the route. After walking across 6km of open moorland in the dark to arrive there for the first time I am unsure who was most un-nerved, me finding a selection of Landcruisers parked outside or them to be interrupted by 3 very cold and wet walkers at 2am.

Anyway, this time I intend to be propelled by 4 wheels, although my Defender does not have a snorkel, if I keep an eye on the forecast do you think the trail is drivable without fitting one?

  2. Hey,

I am trying to source another matching rim for my spare but can't seem to find one. It is a steel rim but it has 5 spokes as opposed to the normal 8 and has a 255/85 r16 tyre.

Anyone know where to get another with tyre?

    Pete

Could it be a Discovery one?

As for tyres, Silverline in Warwick or Town and Country in Leamington, In fact the later may even have a wheel.

  3. Thanks for the replies,

As the rear door is the only thing suffering from tinworm I would quite like to replace it in the future. The rear door card is tatty so replacing it with a 2002 door would mean replacing things there is nothing wrong with, such as the glass.

Do you think it would be worth while buying a swingaway carrier for a post 2002 door and re-drilling the holes in my existing door to allow me to upgrade to this in the future.

I have seen the new doors on Ebay (bare) for around £200

  4. My (new to me) Defender is a 2000 plate TD5 90. The only sign of corrosion is on the inside to the rear crossmember (recently painted by someone else) and the frame of the rear door. I also have a big chunk of weight hanging off the back of it in the shape of a freestyle Alloy shod in BFG A/Ts.

The squeeking of my rear door can in no doubt be accredited to this cumbersome load which can be solved by a swing away carrier. My question really is not how to solve this problem but when?

The rear door changed in 2002? to one that sounds a lot better on paper has anyone any experience of these?

If the new door mounts in the same way why are swing away carriers different for these 2 different doors and why are they so much more expensive?

I don't want to shell out the money for the carrier and then in the future decide to change the already rotting door for a later one (and need to replace the carrier) or to find myself stuck with the old design door.

    Suggestions?

    Phil

  5. what you want to put it on graham????

I would suggest the horn push is out of the question due to the lack of rotary coupling on the Defender. (actually is this why the late airbag models have the earlier skinny spline to accommodate a rotary coupler?)

As for the style that's entirely up to you. I quite like it, but not on my Defender.

  6. I have my Mudrails fitted now, although I have not removed the bulkhead yet but it's a must. My legs are a lot longer than most (tall) people so raising the seat at the back of it's travel it's tight under the steering wheel and my right leg is restricted by the door pull.

They are a really easy product to fit, It took 5 mins to fit them and they really achive what they are designed to do.

Any recommendations for a smaller wheel?

  7. I seem to be better off this month thanks to the budget..

I would think carefully before spending over £20k on a Puma engined machine now. A really mint TD5 might be half that. The increase in Tax might be affordable to those who can afford to trade in their Defenders every 3 years to get a new one but the whole life cost of owning a Puma engined model is going to be considerably more than a Pre 1st March 2001, but not significantly more than those TD5 bought after 26th March 2006.

Does this mean that people will start spending large sums of money refurbishing old defenders rather than buying new? I am sure that £220 a year won't convince most to do so.

Isn't there some loop hole that means a New Defender can be registered as a goods vehicle and be charged less?

  8. Mud Rails: http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/MUD_Seat_Rails.html

Although their site isn't loading for me.. Google's cache got it:

    http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:i9YGe...;cd=1&gl=uk

I thought it was down but this other domain works fine, must be a DNS problem from the other domain name. I have just picked up my defender and will be ordering a set of Mudrails tomorrow (and a bulkhead removal bar)

If they had online ordering I would have already bought them!
