Clutch Problem, Series 2, Please assist with diagnosis

The Problem,

Press the clutch down, change gear - no problem. Then start to lift foot up on clutch and the pedal comes up but the hydraulics lag behind by seconds - so it jumps into gear or stalls.

The vehicle

1966, Series 2, LWB military spec. 4 cyl petrol. Not run all winter, kept in a corrugated shed. The problem appeared over the winter when it wasn't used at all (because it wouldn't start think that was a damp problem).

So far

Oiled the clutch pedal, tried to spot moving parts under the bonnet and under the vehicle but not seen any. The lid is rusted on the hydraulic fluid reservoir.

start with the easy bits to do, are you sure that the pivot on the pedal is not partially siezed? its quite common for this to go stiff

is the pedal return spring inplace? broken or missing?

Change the flexi hose, its probably breaking down internally and acting as a non return valve or releseing the fluid back slowly. Mechanically there nothing much which can go wrong as the relese bearing is supplied by oil from the gearbox. The rest is just a push rod and a shaft.
