BOdy Mount access

Mean Green

Recommended Posts

The rear body mounts on my 1996 Discovery are very badly rusted and I want to replace them. Getting to them is a complete PITA!

Has anyone done it?

How easy (??) is it to lift the body up enough to get access to cut and weld the new body mounts?

As far as I can see the cross member is in fairly good condition and the boot floor has only minor rust so I dont really want to chnage them if I dont need to.

Just body lifted my Disco and getting the body off the chassis was easy. I soaked all the bolts in WD40 a couple of weeks prior to trying to undo them, but took less than 45 minutes to free the body.

Undo all 10 body mounting bolts, undo the 4 seat belt mounts and loosen the steering shaft clamp bolts. Jack up under the sills using a Hilift and some wood to spread the load.

As for replacing the mounts there should be plenty of access with the body jacked up 50-60mm (just chock between the body and chassis while you're working) and the rear bumper removed.

Take out the two rear bolts, and the rear seat belt tie rods (they are just in front of the fuel tank) and slacken off the next pair of body mounting bolts (just infront of the rear wheels). This will allow you to lift the rear about 40-50mm.
