Reiny
Can anybody tell me the size of the nut of the viscous coupling cooling fan on a 300 TDI? I recall being told that it's a 32mm however it seems to be bigger.
cipx2
You have been told right, it's a 32 mm. There are another 4-5 threads starting with the same question and another dozen topics where you can find the answer, if you wanna be told some more
Litch
The 300TDi uses a standard size, double-ended (32mm & 36mm) viscous fan spanners only cost about £10 from any motor-factors or car acessory shop. You may only use it once in a blue moon but like many tools you find it invaluable when you need it and will save yourself lots of swearing & struggling. By trying to work around it or using the wrong tool for the job you only end up making life difficult for yourself yet it still happens. BogMonster
A tip for putting it back on is to put copper grease inside the "nut" part of the new one, and DON'T do it up too tight - it needs to be barely more than would be "finger tight" as the reverse thread means it tends to wind itself on anyway when the engine is running, and it makes it a hell of a lot easier to get off next time!
