paint my wagon

Recommended Posts

Ok, so i've decided on the colour, ive booked a week off work and im gonna paint my 90 with brush and/or roller. I will be ordering the paint from Turners Trade Paints as recommended by various people on the forum as they are coach paint specialists.

My dilemna is this, which paint should i order? The synthetic (also known as coach) paint, 2 litres is more than enough according to them...or the cellulose based paint, of which 6 liters would be required. Any experiences good or bad appreciated. Also what primer should i use, theres no mention of this on their webpage. Prices would also be a help.. any ideas per liter?

Thanks, Mark

I do have a compressor but have never painted with it...afraid of splatter etc if the nozzle fouls. Would i have to mix a thinner with the paint if i decide to spray? What are you paying for cellulose paint may i ask? I will be ordering from the UK as there appears to be nobody here in denmark that stocks vehicle paints at a sensible price.

Me and the kids did my old 110. We used gloss rollers and brushes for cutting in. I used a coach paint from a trade supplier, it cost about £18 iirc. Came out ok, would have been better without the help from the kids but they enjoyed it!

Yes, spraying does give better results but all that prep? I wiped mine with panel wipe and off we went!!

the colour was oxford blue I think, I left the roof moonstone?

you mix it 1to1 and it costs anything from10 to 30 pound for a quater of a litre, but that will cover a wing a couple of doors, dont worry about spitting, your not using a laquer are you??just use a base coat and polish it up after, its likely you will have runs etc but it doesnt matter as you can wet and dry that out and then polish it up.you will have a gorgeous job if you mop it after, depending on where you live i would do that for you,

yep, denmark, i am english though, from stafford...whats this 'mop' business? and how many coats of cellulose would i apply? Sorry for all the questions...its a 1st time job and i want to do it right!

hey im in staffordshire!! youll need two coats roughly, mopping is a machine that is like an ultra fine sander, nearest thing i suggest is get it mopped well at a valeting center, just ask them to spend a little more time on the paint,i reckon you will get that done for the equivelent of 30 pounds,if your serious about having a go at spraying i will pm you the easiest way and talk you through as best i can,i think 100 will cover all costs...paints4u is the place to go,check out there site

I cant wait to get started really but if you have the time to send me advice id appreciate it, no rush as it will be a month or so before i can throw myself into it. thanks a lot!

no problem, once you get the bug though youll be looking at everything thets faded and scratched and thinking i could do that!! im confident you will manage it,the first step for now is prepping,by the way you dont need to primer it unless its bare metal, your existing paint just needs a good rub with SCOTCHBRITE,its quick and simple, just rub it until its dull all over the bits your painting,if you have a few rusty bits start by rubbing down with 180 wet&dry until its flat,if you have hardly any then a tin of grey primer will be okay,...so to start,step1 180 all bad bits until flat then use 400 over the top to get rid of scoring in on the bit you have 180d..step2 primer over those bits you have rubbed down...step3 flat primer with 800 wet&dry...step4 SCOTCHBRITE all over, step5 wipe all panels with meths and lint free cloths...step6 mask areas you dont want to paint..step7 pm me!!
