TD5 Reconditioned Engine

Looks like I need to buy a reconditioned engine for my disco, drive went to oil pump, turbo went and when we drained the oil out of the sump, its got bits of metal in it. We will know what damage has been done once we get the engine out and apart but I have a feeling that it has to be a rebuild of the engine or a reconditioned one.

With the above in mind I have a few questions:-

1) Can anyone recommend anywhere that sells GOOD reconditioned engines?

2) Would I be better paying someone to strip and rebuild my engine or just get a reconditioned engine of the shelf as I understand that some companies offer a discount on a reconditioned engine if I send them mine back.

3) Forget a recon and just get a secondhand engine from a crashed car?

Thanks

We had a good low mileage one from Equicar a while back for a 90 on the company fleet, was probably much cheaper than a recon unit.

If you go for recon then Turner Engineering are probably the best around, the Td5 is not a particularly straightforward thing to work on so I wouldn't go for a cheapo recon job.

If you follow the manual you can't recondition the engine anyway:

1) You can't skim the head (they always say that, but we do)

2) You can't grind the crank (but we do now that o/s shells are available)

3) You can't rebore the engine as o/s pistons are not available (and they aren't)

4) You can't sleeve the engine and fit std pistons (but this is exactly what we do)

5) You can't change the small-end bearings (but we do)

But you can change the 8 spark plugs

Oh goody, I thought it would happen sooner or later - are they KS or AE or what?

We just had an engine resleeved last week, it's normally about the same price give or take a bit.

We also have a head away to be welded in the no 1 intake port where they usually go. Haven't done this before but unlike the Tdi the TD5 head costs a fortune. The LR manual does not mention this fix at all ;)

Jim the pistons we use are KS original equipment.

PS I have sent you a pm.

Will an engine from a 2004 fit my 2001 disco, or would it have to be a 2001 engine. I thought that the engine in the 2004 disco was different but I'm not too sure, a local garage here in Ireland has a crashed 2004 disco with only 36k on the clock and he is looking for 1600 euro for the engine. Would this be a good buy or would I have problems fitting, ie would I have to start hacking it about to get it to work.

The post 2002 engines are different but I am not sure exactly what you have to change to get it to work in an earlier vehicle - I believe injection pressures etc are different and certainly the electronics are different (different engine ECU) but whether you could swap the injectors etc from your engine or not I don't know. However I don't think it would be a plug in and go job - Porny may know more about it though.

The price sounds pretty consistent with what Equicar charged us for an engine with similar mileage IIRC.

I rang Equicar and they have a 2001 in stock but want 1500 pound for it and it has 90,000 miles on it, thats when I thought that the 2004 one ver here might be a much better deal, but not if its not a simple swap.

Thanks

I seen that engine you have and have it in my watch list, but I need to know what I would need to make it work in a 2001 disco, with luck someone here on the forum has done it before and can tell me if its easy.

Thanks
