300 tdi help

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, i had a phone call from my father who owns a 1998 300tdi ES discovery, he is having a slight problem and wondered if any of you gents had come across it. While driving along at 70mph it drives fine and rev's freely but when you approach traffic or a junction and let of the accelerator the revs suddenly die away it will just tick over and not rev and black smoke will come out the back!!! The only way to get it to rev again is turn it of and start it again and as you can tell this is pretty hairy when doing 70    This has only come apparent on long journeys not short distance ones any help is very appreciated

Probably the EGR valve jamming open, it opens on the overrun and should close as soon as the throttle is depressed but if it doesn't you get the symptoms described. Blanking the EGR off is described in several places on the LR4x4 forums if you have a search around.

We had exactly that problem on a TD5 and spent 2 weeks mucking about with electronic stuff before finding it. The idle and black smoke means you are getting zero air flow. This will most likely be caused by a flap of rubber in the intercooler hose(s) cutting off the air flow. When you stop the engine it flaps back to where it was, until the next time.

Check the 90° hose first, that it the normal culprit on a 300tdi. It pays you to carry a spare. If that one is ok, check the other ones.
