Stevie D
105k miles 300tdi 110, has always been a bit of a noise in 5th gear under load, but now I have a horrible grinding / rattling noise when in neutral, with an occasional low pitched whirr. Definatly sounds like a bearing starting to collapse - but where? It stops and is quiet when the clutch pedal is pressed - takes a few seconds.... Can't hear anything abnormal during normal driving - perhaps a little wine during overrun, maybe not. Is it more likely to be a thrust bearing in the clutch assembly or perhaps a lay shaft in the gearbox. Noise doesn't bother me too much - just concerened about the reliability / causing more damage., or is it a case of let it run its course. Gearbox oil was changed about 2.5K miles ago, level is still good and no obvious drastic leaks. Cheers. Steve
