Andy J
Hi, im curious to know if anyone has experience of changing a timing chain on a TD5 engine? Im not even sure how often it should be replaced, im just going on my experience of belts for the 200/300Tdi's and assuming its the same interval. It looks like you have to drop the oil sump as part of the process - is this so? Is it a job that a mere mortal can do? Thanks Andy
wobbley1
dont think there is a set time i have done one on one i was changing the engine on its not that hard you need to remove sump front cover the hardest bit is undoing the crank pully its very tight
BogMonster
There is no set replacement interval AFAIK - just "when it is knackered"! I have seen a couple of Td5 engines with over 150k on them and no apparent problems in this department.
Andy J
There is no set replacement interval AFAIK - just "when it is knackered"! I have seen a couple of Td5 engines with over 150k on them and no apparent problems in this department. So as a rule, do chains generally have a longer lifespan than belts? Also, will i be able to tell it is knackered, before it breaks and ruins the engine, when the time comes? Im completely oblivious to the pro's/con's of a chain belt but im starting to get the feeling it should last longer (yes/no)? Thanks Andy
JimAttrill
If it ain't broke, leave it alone. You will have enough TD5 problems without going looking for them.
