SUDDEN LACK OF POWER

Hi there sorry if been asked before had a look at old postings but not found exact problem.

Anyhoo looking for heads up for problem with missus 52 plate td5 discovery:

She was on way to work Friday morning and with no waring engine lost a load of power, ticks and idles fine and will drive at low speeds but as soon as you put foot down no power and no turbo ! feels like engine is being pulled back (if you get what I mean?) unplugged M.a.s. plug and seemed better so stuck new one meter on, but there is still a real hesitation when trying to pull away. She thinks is getting worse.

So looking for info as to where to look next before giving to garage to get charged a fortune.

Cheers for reading posting and many thanks for any advice Houch.

Fuel pump or EGR.

Can you hear the pump (which is in the fuel tank) whining slightly when you put your head under the tank? Should be a hum but not too loud, if you can hear it clearly from inside the vehicle it is on the way out. When you turn the ignition on you should get a brief "meow" noise from the pump which then settles quickly to a quiet hum. If you can't hear anything at all then it has already expired!

If there is loads of smoke the EGR may be jammed open which also causes massive power loss but with clouds of black smoke whenever you put your foot down, if not then it is probably the pump.

What engine RPM do you get if you floor the throttle in neutral? Should get 4750 approx, if you only get around 3000-3500 this would also point to the pump being the problem. Only way to be sure is a pressure test but this needs an adaptor to fit into the fuel rail, pressure should be 58psi/4bar at all times.

You can change the pump yourself but you have to take the carpet up in the back, not a 5 min job but no specialist tools required. New pump will make a nasty hole in 200 quid though.

If neither of the above then the next thing to check is for split or dislodged air intake hoses, and also check the circlip on the turbo wastegate hasn't pinged off and let the operating rod fall off!

I get the same problem on a 51 reg Td5, very intermittent.

I'm no expert , but my turbo wastegate rod was sticking and that was affecting the power of my car. Apparently this is a very common issue. I took the rod off and lubed the wastegate arm and worked it back and forward a bit.

I also have had power issues with the MAP sensor on the inlet manifold being gunged up. I also had a film of dirt on my MAF connections and the other sensor on the airbox which seemed to be affecting the running of the car.

Another common one is the turbo and intercooler hoses delaminting and restricting the air flow.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Houch,

I had a similiar problem not long ago, turned out it was a dirty connection on the fuel cut-off switch lead on the injector pump. Mine would idle & cruise but as soon as it needed more juice for take-off or a hill it would start jerking & eventually just stopped completely.

Might be helpful

Steve
