Rolly
Sure its smoke and not steam?
ThreeSheds
Speaking from petrol engine experience - it sounds like a head gasket to me where there is a track between a coolant gallery and a cylinder. I think that in normal running the leak is from the cylinder to the waterway causing pressurisation, but on the overrun the water flows into the cylinder causing steam? Is it using water or engine oil? Is the cooling system pressurising before it gets hot? Is there any sign of water in the oil (emulsion) or oil in the water? JimAttrill
You actually need to smell the smoke so get someone to follow you with their window open. If it is diesel it will smell like diesel, if it is oil the smoke will be more blue and smell a bit nauseating. If it disperses quickly and has no great smell it is steam. Checking on exhaust smoke is easier on a Defender because you can see the exhaust in the LH mirror.
gavin_hayward
i also thought it was headgasket but checked water and oil levels = fine also checked for combustion signs in coolant and oil = fine? would white smoke be caused by air being drawn into the system from a leaky injector pipe? JimAttrill
would white smoke be caused by air being drawn into the system from a leaky injector pipe? No, because then high pressure diesel would leak out, not air in.
