fitting a TD5 into 110 defender

You'll probably need a different gearbox, as the gear change mechanism on a Disco box is located slightly different than on a 110

Otherwise, if you have all the sensors and the ECU then it should be not too much of an issue, although it might be that you'd need a Defender ECU as well.

Make sure you have everything you need for the immobilizer. Not sure on Land Rovers but with a lot of modern vehicles, the engine E.C.U. is coded the the immoilizer E.C.U. which in turn is coded to the key. You may have to use all of these items to get it to run.

Tell you what though it's a bargain at that price.

Your best bet would be to buy a complete 90/110 Td5 bulkhead loom (someone on here had one for sale, otherwise try Porny/Bell Auto's/eBlag as they are advertised on there quite often)

I think the disco engine loom is different to a defender one too, again, Autocraft_south on ebay have them often for about £30 IIRC.

That way, it keeps everything plug & pray.

Re: the ECU's.... depends if you want an alarm or not. there are easy ways to remove the alarm/immobiliser totally from them (although to be honest, IMO it's madness to do that... everyone WANTS their vehicle to be safe, right?)

It would be easier to fit the Td5 fuel tank, see Porny, he got mine for a very resonable price, along with fuel pipes as well.

If you fit the whole dash loom, then you'll need a rear chassis loom (as the plugs are different) but Porny got mine for me too...again, very resonable.

Take a look at Nick McFarland's blog on his Td5 conversion to a 110 for an insight.

ok i have just found out it is an auto gearbox with the TD5 engine. This would be make a nice finish but i may be lots of work. has any one done an auto conversion for a defender before who has any advice?

i have looked at the link for the TD5 conversion and it looks like i have the equipment to do this.

I will decide what to do this weekend and let you know. Any More advice would be helpful.

If i bought the engine now would it get damaged it by leaving it until the summer before i start the conversion?

thank you

You could probably sell the autobox on ebay and get the money back in whole for what you paid for the engine & box!

That way, you could then buy (if wanted) an R380 manual, or an earlier 4 speed mechanical (not electronic) auto and get ashcrofts to supply the kit to bolt it to your Td5.

Althouh I reckon that the newer Td5 autobox would be cool in a defender, and that compushift kit is pretty snazzy B) B)

As Chris says, if you're going to store the engine for any length of time, some precautions are necessary to stop bits getting knackered... putting bungs in the turbo inlet/outlets, oil ways, water ways etc, and maybe some preserving oil if you can see it becoming 9~12 months

BTW... you can buy the weld on Td5 chassis mounts from Richards chassis (i got mine from them when I started building my 110)

Auto into defender is nice but the trim is expensive (£200+) and compushift is also (£800ish).

If you dont buy the engine & gearbox then can i have it please, could do with a spare for the d-lander and its exactly what i run linked to the compushift system :)
