TD5 auto : M & S lights come on in hot weather

Travelling on holiday over December my Disco 2 TD5 ES Auto did something it only did 2 years before while travelling the same road under similar hot conditions (> 35degC).

I'm travelling along at 125km/h (as per GPS) on a relatively level road (car loaded but no trailer or roof rack) in ambient temps of around 35degC with speed control on. We've been going like this for more than an hour, so engine, gearbox and diffs are as hot as its going to get.

Suddenly the speed control will cancel all by itself, the torque convertor lockup will DISengage (revs rise) and the M and S lights will start flashing (this indicates gearbox fault condition). Coast to a stop with autobox in N, switch off ignition, count to 10, re-start and drive off with all OK. An hour or so later same thing happens. Restart and all is OK.

Anyone have any idea what could be going on here and how to prevent?

Hi.

I had a similar issue with my Disco. In my case it was the postion sensor for the gear lever that was getting damp when a outlet from the AC dripped water onto the wiring harness for it. It only happened when the AC was working hard. Rerouting, extending the AC outlet solved the issue.

As Paul said. Land rover did bring out a bulletin for this, think they brought out a modified gear position sensor/loom that was more water tight to avoid the problem.

Thanks guys!! That sounds highly plausible as the AC WAS working overtime in that heat! I'll follow up with the dealer.

mine doesn't have air con but is stuck in a car park with M&S flashing , i washed it earlier, how can i get it going?

Hi there.

Not sure which part of the world you are in, but here in SA, as soon as the water had evaporated, the M&S lights on my vehicle stopped flashing.

Also, with the M&S lights flashing, the car should be at least useable as it is in Limp Home mode, where the only gears used are reverse and 3rd.

Perhaps take it for a small run and build up a bit of heat in the gearbox then leave it for a while. The heat should dry the switches, assuming it is a damp gearbox selector swich. Obviously, check fluid levels etc for any other problems before taking it for a drive.

Good luck.

As already mentioned this is quite common and often linked to the gear position selection switch. It will use 2nd and 3rd gear only in drive. Reverse should work as normal.

If it is happening every time, try starting in neutral and don't use park when ignition is on as I have found that it is quite often this extreme of the cable selection where the issue occurs.

Mark.
