gelf
something has started banging suddenly under the RRC......... any slight pot ho;le make it sound awful, as if something is about to drop off. nothing is loose that i can find, but i was on the side of the road, anyway nursed it home...... i think it may be the self leveling damper........ can the whole lot be ditched, or does it have to have one? bishbosh
I haven't heard of a boge strut making banging nosies before. Are you sure the A frame ball joint is OK and done up tight? Also check shock bushes. To answer your question, the strut can be removed. Most struts by now have ceased to function - does your work? To test, put a substantial weight in the boot of the RR - enough so the suspension sags significantly. Measure the bumpstop to axle clearance (rear). Drive around the block a few times. Measure the bumpstop to axle clearance again. If the strut is working the suspension should have self levelled and your second measurement should be bigger than your first. If it is knackered just un bolt it at the top and hack it off the A frame at the bottom * and throw it away. If it is still working, even a bit be very careful removing it as it is under pressure. If it is working and you do remove it you will need to replace the rear springs to avoid the saggy ar$e syndrome. * A tidier way is to remove the centre part of the A frame and replace it with one from a vehicle that does not have a self leveller. You don't really need the self leveling unit, although if you carry a lot of weight in the back they are helpful. Disco's never had them fitted but did have stiffer rear springs. Its worth checking the rear A-frame ball joint for play though as they can make a knocking noise over bumps.
