ajbaldwin Posted March 30, 2009 Share Posted March 30, 2009 Hello All I am putting together a trip to southern Africa for 5 months hopefully shipping my D90 into Namibia and doing a loop round southern Africa My questions are around fitting out a 90 for this type of trip, I know most people use a 110\130 for this type of trip but there is only 2 of us going and I already have a 90 that is fitted out for off-road but not for expeditions. and I am kind of attached to it so I want to use it if possible. As we are single vehicle I am not planning on heading to far into Bush or off the beaten path as is is my first trip to the region. So the question is Does anyone have a overland equipped 90 out there that can send me some pictures of how you have yours loaded??? Any does or don't with a 90 ? .Also where do you fit the fridge ect? Any must do Mods for them? My biggest concern is fuel storage as I want to spend a week around Moremi\Savuti withoug having to keep heading back to maun to re-fuel, and also there are a few long stretches that I will need more than a tank and a few cans for Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We still managed to spend six months in it though....... You shouldn't have a fuel problem in Moremi/ Savuti as long as you fill up at Maun/ Kasane. I only have a standard tank on my 110 I carry four ten litre jerry cans on the roof. Nick. Don't mention Foley. They don't even know about a Cross Border Permit for Namibia......As for their preparation....Sans Parole. zim Posted March 31, 2009 Share Posted March 31, 2009 fuel will be a problem for you as you know, around the delta there are long stretches of road with very little 'civilisation' but it's the most amazing place on earth in my opinion. I'm not sure about now, but when we were travelling through bots, there were animal control checkpoints (mainly for foot n mouth), and you weren't allowed to carry certain items e.g. grass baskets / cases, meat etc. Namib, Kalahari, Makgadikgadi, Chobe, Okavango, Hwange, Vic Falls, Matetsi, Kariba is my favourite region in the world You (i'm assuming you're british) will need a visa to get into Zimbabwe, but these aren't a problem to get at a border post - cost of £35, i think. ajbaldwin Posted March 31, 2009 Author Share Posted March 31, 2009 Hello All and thanks for the reply I am going for 5-6 months but that will not all be camping in the roof tent I am reading the Bradt Guides at the min and using tracks 4 africa for my route but my main issue was arround kitting out my D90 for the the trip I alrady have it setup for a bit of off-roading but I need to prep it for overland use and make sure I can source parts if I need to. Also I was looking for some tips from people on where to place the fridge and also storage options for my load space as I know it will be a bit tight I am thinking about fitting a second tank as I don't really want to have to keep a lead of fuel in the back if I can help it and I don't want to overlaod my roof as it will have a tent taking up a fair bit of space thanks all for the advise Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They do a rear fender mounted fuel tank. As for the fridge they also manufacture a fridge slider which is fitted above a Wolf Pack Slider (4 wolf packs) mounted in the rear of your vehicle with access through the rear door. We travelled from SA to the UK using their Roof Rack and aforementioned equipment without any problems. Further advise, only carry what is needed as most of the equipment you think you will need is never used and uses unnecessary space and only adds on extra weight (be as light as possible). Unless you really go into the sticks, most of the roads in Namibia, Botswana and SA are generally in fair to good condition and we never had need for any special protection equipment, under body, roll cages, etc., simple don't get yourself into situations you can't get out of. nas90 Posted April 11, 2009 Share Posted April 11, 2009 You might consider a pukka bush trailer to keep the 90 fairly uncluttered with maybe fuel and water only in the rear tub for safe keeping. Having just joined our forum, try a search on trailers, we have had lots of good information this last 18 months or so. Chris Watts a mod on here built himself a trailer and reads90 hailing from Australia ( but a Brit) has been all around the sub-continent with his 90 and trailer and plenty of pics and info.
