To bush or not to (poly) bush

Hi guys,

First the explanation: Bernard is a 1998 300 TDi. This summer he is going to Tajikistan (in central Asia, former Soviet block) to work for a charity and I have to get him ready for the trip and then his subsequent life out there. I'm not hugely technical but learning fast - so apologies in advance for any stupid questions etc as there will no doubt be quite a few things I will need help with. I have been looking around the site and have already found some very helpful stuff. Keep up the good work!

Bernard will not be doing any serious mud-wallowing, but roads in Tajikistan are pretty terrible - think large amounts of road akin to farm tracks, some sealed but deteriorating roads, a few (relatively) well maintained roads between the big towns.

My most pressing task is to sort out the suspension. He was already lifted a couple of inches when I bought him and so it has a tendency to roll around corners, but is generally comfy and rides ok. One rear shock is now leaking badly, so I'm thinking may as well replace all four to give it as much trouble-free life as possible (I know, it's a Landy!)

Two questions really:

- Any suggestions on what shocks to use? (And to what extent do I need to consider the springs?)

- Should I be using Polybushes? I understand there are pros & cons, but I don't know what is going to give the best combination of longevity, performance, cost.

Sadly, budget is an issue.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,

Graham (on behalf of Bernard <_< )

I'm not a fan of poly bushes. They simply transmit too much shock through the body and are not very flexible. Stick with rubber.

As for shocks, it all depends on what you can get. Probably some ARB Old Man Emu shocks, but you may be able to find something cheaper.

They only work with a suspension lift, i.e. longer springs, so if you have stock ride height, perhaps look at other brands.

KYB?

Do a search under my name on "Polybush" :(

Re the above, if you wnat long life and budget etc then = GENUINE all round :)

look into terrafirma shocks... i switched from pro comps to these and they are decent gear and relatively inexpensive!!

they come with rubber bushes.. which i reccomend.. polybushes are too stiff for my liking and can help your shocks snap!!

There's some stuff in the Defender forum currently about polybushes - different animal but it may help....

Good luck!

Thanks guys. I haven't had a chance to follow your leads yet, but will do so.

Appreciate it.
