OldShep56
A few weeks ago, I posted on here about a problem my wife had. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=41731 Well, the **** has really hit the fan now. Wifey said the car was running ok and thus I believed her. We left last Saturday morning for our bi-annual trip to Brittany. As soon as I drove out of the ferry port at Caen, I sensed a problem and was not amused. As I drove around the ring road, I lost the drive a couple of times. When we were on a series of long hills and on cruise control, the revs suddenly flew up as the drive was lost and then as the revs dropped the drive would kick back in but by then the speed had dropped so the kick down would work and the drive was lost again. When we left the hills the car behaved perfectly, and for the next three hours there was no problem. Then just 11 kms from our destination, as I came off a roundabout, I lost the drive completely. The result is her beloved Hippo is now in a small garage over in Brittany awaiting the AA to arrange its collection and return to the UK. Luckily the wife, as always, had arranged for full Euro cover from the AA and I have had the VERY dubious distinction of driving around all week in a Renault Kangoo (have told wifey to shoot me if I ever look like buying one!!) The help I need now is this ........ I have the AA returning the car straight to a LR Dealer in Chichester as it obviously needs to go onto a diagnostic machine and find the fault as the French garage did not have the equipment to faultfind on it. Is there anyone in the Petersfield/Portsmouth/Chichester area that has the equipment to do this?? How about the repairs once it is known what is wrong?? I have the facility to move the car once it is back by pick up. I am not trying to get a job done on the cheap BUT I bloody object to putting money into a dealers pocket if the same job can be carried out by a small operation that isn't going to turn me over on labour costs. GKP
Most of the indies around that area tend to specialise in Defenders etc rather than having diagnostic knowledge of Freelanders. Having said that it might be worth talking to these guys: http://www.chichester4x4.co.uk/index.html although I've never used them and can't vouch for their work. It's strange the car is being taken to Chichester when there's a dealership less than ten minutes from the Portsmouth ferryport. Seriously, a good move to have have taken out the breakdown cover, if you hadn't you would be seriously in the doghouse out of pocket. Actually no LOL ................ wifey knows it is her fault as I had asked her 3 or 4 days before we went away if the car had been behaving and she would NOT let me take it out for a 'test drive' the day before. But needless to say, I haven't quite reminded her off this as I am sure she knows
OldShep56
Thanx for the replies, guys. Have spoken to Chichester 4x4 and when it returns, that's where she will be going. Will update when I know more.
OldShep56
Well, the prognosis after going on the machine was the worse One recon gearbox and a new torque convertor coming up. Thanx to the guys that recommended ............. I am more than happy with Chichester 4x4 especially as his labour charges are less than half the dealers. Will be hit with a bill for nearly 2k when we collect next week
