Countax
Over the xmas period i plan to upgrade my A127-45 amp alternator to an A127-70 Amp version i picked up from the local Ford breakers. I will need to upgrade the cabling between the alternator and the starter motor to handle the extra current. My question is if this can be done from unerneath the vehicle or if i need to remove the exhaust downpipe and access the starter solenoid from the top? Thx in advance Nigel
western
moving the exhaust downpipe should give enough access to the starter soleniod, take the upgraded cable back to the battery too.
Ex Member
You should not need to remove anything. You can access the starter terminal with everything in there. You do not need to touch the cable from the battery to the starter as that is already very large.
Orange
Make sure you disconnect the battery if you don't take the downpipe off... There is enough space to avoid 'contact' with it out of the way, but you will need to be careful if you leave it on!! Don't ask.........sparky, sparky!! Mark
As has been said, don't worry about the cable from the starter back to the battery - that is already 35mm^2 or bigger... more than capable of carrying the 70A peak output of your new alternator. Countax
Many thx guys. If you see a bright star in the night sky over the Cotswolds in the coming weeks its not what you think, it will be my evaporating spanner if i forget to disconnect the battery! Cheers for the advice and have a great xmas. Nigel
