Gearbox noises!

Hi, I have a 1991 2.5 petrol ninety, with (I believe) an LT77 gearbox. When in reverse, it makes an awful whiring noise. It is also impossible to get it into 5th until its warmed up and at a decent speed (55mph+). Any suggestions as to the problem and solution very much appreciated.

I am planning on an oil change in the next week or two as there is a lot on oil on the gearbox, so maybe not so much in it!

Thanks

Leigh

How long have you had the ve-hicle? :) "Awful whiring" is correct when compared to any modern car!

If the box is low on oil and / or has the wrong stuff in it, it can make it very hard to get any gear in a cold box (repeat to self, ATF not EP90 ... :D ) Sounds like that would be a good first stop. Just as an aside, does the aforesaid 'whiryness happen as badly if you put it in reverse with the transfer box in neutral too?

I've had the ninety for a month or so, but I've had a 200tdi disco previously, which didn't sound anything like this!

I will try it with the transfer box in neutral tommorrow. I guess by this suggestion your thinking the transfer box might be the problem?

They(L/R) now say to use MTF in the main box and not ATF as the ATF doesn't have enough protection in it so to speak for the main box, Personally after a recommendation from someone I now use MTF 75 and this has made a hell of a difference to mine-smoother changes and also a much quieter main gear box, Also using synthetic EP 90 in the transfer box and axles has also made a difference too

I tried the landy in reverse with the transfer box in neutral - no noise to be heard. But the noise is there in both high and low ratio, so does this point to anything?!

I also tried rolling backwards in neutral, and couldn't hear anything, so I'm guessing this rules out diffs?
