Divster
It looks as if the seals in my brakle master cylinder are on the way out. I've never done a master cylinder overhaul before. Having looked at the Haynes, it doesn't look that bad. Is there anything I should be aware of? Dave (1994 Defender 90 non abs btw)

Les Henson
Done this a few times. The seal kit invariably comes with seals that'll do more than one type of cylinder, so don't worry if you have some left over. If there are variations to your particular cylinder, then there will be an information slip inside the box saying what differences there are. Take careful note of how the components are in the cylinder itself - some components are spring loaded, and could fly off. It's vital that seals are the exact same way round as the old ones. They are designed to push the fluid in one direction only to create the needed brake pressure, there may however be one seal facing another, but copy it like for like. Two seals that look the same might not be - the hole through the centre may be a different diameter, or the seal itself might be thicker. Once stripped - clean the cylinder both inside and out, check for score marks or steps inside the bore, if there are, then it's unlikely the cylinder will be much good and you would be wise to just buy a new complete unit.As Keith says - clean cleaner than a clean thing, and only use brake fluid to prelube on assembly. Doing the job sounds a bit intimidating and brakes are very important, but it just requires care and concentration. Strange you should post this, I have to rebuild a 90 one this weekend. Les.
