Niamh
Should there be any rotational play in a CV joint? I never recall seeing any before, however this RH CV joint has quite a bit and I'm wondering if that's the source of the vibration under power. I don't really want to go to the trouble of pulling the other CV joint to compare unless I have to. RHD 300TDi non-ABS Niamh
disco_al
check your prop u/j's and the rear doughnut - i had a vibration under power and it turned out to be the rear prop coupling falling apart
Niamh
Both seem OK. Though I'm not going to put the CV joint back in until I get a view on whether it's OK or not. Axial play seems OK and is mostly at the circlip so it seems Niamh
Fantic
Last CV joint in my Disco had no rotational play at all. Did it click or tap on full lock?
Niamh
No click on full lock... but with 235/85s full lock isn't what it used to be. Given the cost I think it's worth replacing anyway. Niamh
Niamh
Just stripped it off the 1/2 shaft and most of the play is in the splines between 1/2 shaft & CV joint. Niamh
Fantic
That could easily be a source of the vibration then .. and any other connections in the drive train with even minimal play in them will only add to it ..
picpoki
I have a lot of free play in my defender to. If I jacke one wheel and try to turn it it has 1/5 of turn of free play. So this would be the splines fault? Cheers D.
Niamh
72 degrees of play! Niamh

Not necessarily all down to splines .. play at the wheel is from cvjoint, halfshaft, diff pinion/crown, UJ's, transfer input, transfer to gearbox etc ... more than one connection, and all wear eventually! picpoki
That`s quite a lot, right? I just got reconditioned gearbox and got a new input gear and I don`t want to change the hole thing again after 2 years.
Niamh
If you've got that must play then if it is splines then you have practically none left... FWIW it takes about 15 mins to pull a 1/2 shaft and CV joint to check. Niamh
picpoki
So I have to change halfshaft and CV joint? What about the diferential splines?
