WarPig Posted June 17, 2010 Share Posted June 17, 2010 Whilst investigating the rattle underneath my 110 300tdi, with the wheels chocked, handbrake off and gears in nuteral, Ive noticed there is almost a 1/4 turn play in the front and rear prop shafts (well, perhaps an 8th of a turn) . There is also a tiny amount of play beteween the props & rear UJs, although they all turn together. Should the props be solid? How much play should there be? And what should I tighten/replace. Maverik Posted June 17, 2010 Share Posted June 17, 2010 There is a fair amount of backlash in your prop's, I'd guess about 1/8 of a turn easily. there should be little or no play horizontally or laterally in your UJ's themselves, if there is it means your UJ bearings are worn. You could be starting to hear the first signs of one of your props being unbalanced due to worn UJ's. There should also be no torsional play in the prop shaft itself (expansion joint). Replacing a UJ is pretty straight forward, especially if you have a vice and a hammer, a little trickier without vice, but still do-able. you can pick UJ's up from feebay and most parts distributers. just make sure you get a decent "branded" set - they get a lot of hammer. Aragorn Posted June 18, 2010 Share Posted June 18, 2010 If the play is at the diff/transferbox flanges rather than the propshaft itself then yes its normal. Its just the slack in the various gears and flanges etc between the clutch and the wheel. The amount of play will depend on how worn the diffs, transferbox and rest of the axle drive transmitting components are. When checking for play in the prop, you want to hold the diff/transferbox flange in one hand and the prop in the other, and try to move the UJ itself. There should be no slack in the actual UJ.
