300Tdi back brake pad

Just got my first Disco 1 300Tdi 1998. It was making a scraping noise and on investigation the rear o/s outboard disc pad had fallen through the caliper and was resting on the disc hub, sawing a neat groove through the hub! The brake was still functional, but probably not well!

Is this normal? The whole caliper and pad were pretty corroded, inboard piston seized and both will be replaced, both sides.

300's are (in)famous for it.

Had it happen to mine and have short term bodged it by judicious use of chisel along the edge which swells the (in my case almost brand new) pad backing enough to stop them dropping through. Looking at replacement soon though as I don;t like bodges like that.

Common problem, the cast ledges on the caliper body simply corrode away thro time allowing the pads to drop onto the hub.

Best and safest solution is to replace each of the rear calipers with new.

Thanks to you both for that! It's reassuring to know that it's a routine fault. Whoever designed that set-up didn't think too far ahead!

Both sides calipers, pads and discs have been replaced now under warranty and all is working well!

Hi

There is a work-around to this, if you pick up a set of pads from a Defender 110 (part no SFP000280A) and fitting kit (part no STC8575) they are fitted to the caliper with pins which go through the pads as opposed to the ones that just hold them down. You will need to drill the fixing holes on the calipers to take the pins, the pins are then go through the caliper and the pad and are held in place with split pins. These parts are avilable from http://www.lrseries.com among other places. I have this mod on mine and it works well, it was recommended to me by my local Landrover specialist. Much cheaper than replacing the calipers.

Thanks Andy, a useful tip. Hopefully the new calipers fitted will see many years service before I need to do that, but I'll remember the advice.
