8274

Recommended Posts

Before I start.. im not sure if this is in the right place, so mods can you move it to the right section please!

I have recently bought a 8274, after a saga with the courier company getting it here (18ton lorry couldnt fit down my road, I had 3 40ton concrete lorrys here yesterday  ) I eventually got it into the workshop.

I thought, right take the wire rope off because it will be lighter to move about on my own, and I'm hopefully going plasma straight away. So I started pulling and pulling and it felt a bit strange. Then all of a sudden the end plate fell off.

It seems the "end cap" (PN 7584) and screw (PN 7) are were missing! Now I'm still not very sure, but in the end support housing, its just a bushing and no bearing as such?

That over come I removed the wire rope and began to look at the brake, remove the clip and, you guessed it the brake is rusted absolutely solid, does anyone have any handy hints on removing this? also i can see the brake disc thingy moving about freely inside, should this be?

So onto the top of the winch.. I having paid to much attention to the contactors as I fancy buying an albright, but they appear to be past there best

I undid the 3 allen bolt and took a glimpse inside, All the gears appear to be fine, nothing stripped and nothing rusty.

But it didnt half smell like burning oil i there, and there was gungey gunk stuck to the outer casing about 2mm thick!

Now.. I feel a full strip down is in order. I just hope i can get the brake assembly apart :(

What bearing/bush kits do I need? and where do i buy them from? (cheapest please, gigglepin?)

My serial is 125198 (very early isnt it?)

Part number is 7585

and date code is CD9 (can someone decipher that?)

Also the motor i have seems to be one of the original prestolite (?) motors, should i upgrade straight away?

Damn this is going to be an expensive winch :(

Thankyou!

I'm having trouble getting the drum off, i have pulled the lock plate up and givem the drum a wiggle but it wont come off. is there something im missing?

I'm still battling with the brake aswell, its rusted on very well! ive wd40'd it and also warmed it and tryed using a hub puller but it still wont come free. ive left it soaking with more wd.

do gigglepin/ devon 4x4 stock everything for these winches? as it isnt that clear on websites.

Thanks

Since my last post I have managed to remove the drum, it was very very tight in the bush, I think the washer and seal had failed (I didn't take a picture) and water/dirt ingress had occurred. The grit in this bush had scored it badly so I'm going to have to replace it.

Now I've not done a lot of this so was wondering how am I supposed to get the bush out of the casing?

Have read this Im almost certain Im going to have to tap the brake shaft out and get the outer brake disk pressed off.

Can I just tap the shaft through from the opposite end?

sorry for all the questions, I just dont want to crack the casing or gnaw a gear as these things are bloomin expensive!

Although held in high esteem, the design is far from perfect. People have produced upgrades to address some areas (where reasonable to do so). Vigilance and constant service/maintenance is required for some other areas.

Sealing from water ingress is one weakness and results in water mixing with the gear oil and corrosion if not attended to in a timely manner - a good reason for the common modification to add drain and filler plugs.

The rope drum rotates in thin wall (~1 mm thick), plastic bearing bushes that slip in/out easily.

The brake can be very difficult to remove from old winches. There is a bronze bearing bush that presses in to the gear case on the brake side of the brake shaft. Sometimes I have had to knock the bush, complete with shaft and brake so the shaft could be pressed out of the brake hub.

Can I just tap the shaft through from the opposite end?

Yes with perseverance the bush will knock out of the case.
