retrofit airco: some questions

hello, I am new here

I am driving a 300tdi, 1998 Rioja red 3-doors and my lovely wife a 200tdi 1992 5-doors in carrigada green, we live in Antwerp Belgium and we are landy fans.

I hope someone is willing to help me with a few questions about subject

I managed to obtain a retrofit airco kit for my disco 300tdi (1998)

but I have a few questions about it.

firstly the evaporator (the heating-cooling box inside) was transformed for a RHD because someone had made some changes and I did not see this right away

they closed the right air inlet (for the blower and cut the left one open, also the electrics where changed from right to the left side.

I might say I am now a qualified dashboard remover

Here come's the quizz :)

It appears that the fan's (from the receiver-drier in front of the radiator) keeps on running the whole time.....IS THIS NORMAL ?

What are the 2 temp sensors for (in the elbow of the Thermostat) ?

I feel the car's holding in when the airco switches on, IS THIS NORMAL ?

How can I check if there is enough oil in the compressor and how do I have to fill it ?

And very inportant: It smells like whet feet when the blower is switched on, how can i deal with this ?

thank u very much for answering

I can only answer two points, the engine will hold back when its running as it consumes quite a bit of power to run it. The smell is coming from the cooling coil, it needs sterilising/cleaning and i think there is a spray that will do this, have a chat with an aircon centre as it only takes minutes.

The condenser fans in front of the radiator run all the time the air con is on.

One of the temperature sensors in the thermostat housing switches on the condensor fans if for any reason the engine coolant starts to over-heat. This happens whether the air con is switched on or not.

I don't know what the other sensor does, but would like to.

The smell you are experiencing is bacteria build up on the evaporator coils and fins. It happens.

I hate to say but you should have sterilized the evaporator before you installed it.

The way to sterilize it now is too set off a can or two of fungicide aerosol in the car and do it every year. Available from air con specialists.

The only way to find out how much oil and refrigerant is in the system is to remove it by vacuum, measure it and then refill with the correct quantities of refrigerant and oil.

This should only be done after vacuum testing your system for leaks.

The best way to get this done is to take it to an air con specialist.

You can do it your self but it's a bit hit and miss, you have no way of knowing the precise amounts of oil and refrigerant in the system, could affect performance.

You've done well to have fitted the system yourself.

Best of luck.

The second temperature switch in the thermostat elbow is to switch off the air con when the engine is starting to over heat so the car does not have to work so hard trying to cool the engine's radiator with the warm / hot air that comes from the air con. condensor. The system should hold 900 g +/- 50 g and 180 ml of oil . Regards Jonathan
